A $1,000 reward is being offered by the Humane Society Yukon for help finding the person responsible for shooting a five-month-old puppy and leaving her for dead at the Pelly Crossing dump.
A $1,000 reward is being offered by the Humane Society Yukon for help finding the person responsible for shooting a five-month-old puppy and leaving her for dead at the Pelly Crossing dump.
Shelley Cuthbert, the society's acting president, said today the young dog, named Pelly by Mae Bachur Animal Shelter staff, was brought to the Whitehorse facility with a bullet wound on Sept. 10.
The bullet shattered the young dog's left front shoulder, and the wound was infected.
"It was determined that the leg needed to be amputated,” Cuthbert said.
The small mixed-breed dog, who staff say has a loving and playful personality, can't see visitors yet at her foster home while she still has a fever and is recovering from the infection.
"If she was not brought to us when she was, she would have died,” Cuthbert said.
The reward money was raised with help from the popular animal rescue group Rescue Ink.
The volunteer group was in Whitehorse last weekend to help with a large fund-raiser for the shelter.
Pelly is doing well post-surgery and has adapted well to living on three legs.
"It helps that she was so young when this happened,” Cuthbert said.
A number of people have come forward looking to give Pelly a new home but no final decision will be made until the dog is healthy.

Laws aren't going to stop people from doing bad things. Maybe we need to fix people so they don't breed more stupid people.

I am continually shocked and disgusted at the way people treat dogs. These are the creatures that love you unconditionally! When you come home to them they are always happy to see you. This kind of thing infuriates me. If you don't want your dog, find a safe place for it...don't be a cruel coward!

People have to be licensed to drive. That doesn't prevent stupid drivers. People think the more laws we have, somehow makes us safer. It's a lazy way to deal with things and it seems to be the norm in Canada. Why is there only a couple of comments? Every dog article here seems to bring worldwide attention. You people make no sense at all. Maybe if his name was Trevor?

Just occured to me that a large portion of pet owners should be licensed to own a pet. There are way more bad pet owners then bad pets.

I love animals more than i care about most people.
Incidents like this just confirm that there are monsters disguised as human beings that perhaps themselves should be shot and left at the dump.
Whoever you are, Karma never forgets.
