A $1,000 reward is being offered by the Humane Society Yukon for help finding the person responsible for shooting a five-month-old puppy and leaving her for dead at the Pelly Crossing dump.

Shelley Cuthbert, the society's acting president, said today the young dog, named Pelly by Mae Bachur Animal Shelter staff, was brought to the Whitehorse facility with a bullet wound on Sept. 10.

The bullet shattered the young dog's left front shoulder, and the wound was infected.

"It was determined that the leg needed to be amputated,” Cuthbert said.

The small mixed-breed dog, who staff say has a loving and playful personality, can't see visitors yet at her foster home while she still has a fever and is recovering from the infection.

"If she was not brought to us when she was, she would have died,” Cuthbert said.

The reward money was raised with help from the popular animal rescue group Rescue Ink.

The volunteer group was in Whitehorse last weekend to help with a large fund-raiser for the shelter.

Pelly is doing well post-surgery and has adapted well to living on three legs.

"It helps that she was so young when this happened,” Cuthbert said.

A number of people have come forward looking to give Pelly a new home but no final decision will be made until the dog is healthy.
