The Department of Community Services launched a new driver's handbook today.

The Yukon Driver's Basic Handbook had not been updated since 1999. It was created to update Yukoners on the new rules of the road as well as help drivers develop safer habits.

Community Services Minister Archie Lang launched the new handbook this morning at the motor vehicles branch offices, calling it "an important resource on the rules of the road and safe driving practices, whether you are a new driver or have been behind the wheel for a long time.”

Some major changes to the handbook include guides to how traffic circles work, information on the new ban against hand-held electronic devices while driving and how to reduce fuel consumption.

Walter Brennan, the manager of motor vehicles, explained the new guidebook, which has been in the works for about a year and a half, was created because driving habits, laws and vehicles have changed drastically since the guidebook was last revised.

The guide is available for free in English and French at the motor vehicles office or can be downloaded from the Department of Community Services' website.
