Reveal money’s ‘secret sources,’ says NDP

The Liberal government was pressed on the $106,000 anonymously donated to the party, fielding questions in the legislative assembly this week.

The Liberal government was pressed on the $106,000 anonymously donated to the party, fielding questions in the legislative assembly this week.

“This is unprecedented – no party in Yukon’s history has received such a high proportion of their money from secret sources,” Kate White, the leader of the NDP, said Tuesday.

“Yukoners deserve basic transparency from the premier.”

The Yukon Liberal Party’s total revenue was $156,000 in 2019. This was nearly triple the revenue of both the Yukon Party and the NDP.

More than two thirds of that $156,000 was itemized under “other revenue” – without disclosing specifics about who provided the funds.

Devin Bailey, a former Liberal pary president, told the Star during the summer that “other revenue” constitutes funds raised at events.

“This changes year to year, but standardly includes things like our annual golf tournament and the Leaders’ Dinner — where contributions are raised through such things as food and beverage sales and silent auctions,” Bailey said in an email on July 17.

“We had a strong year last year and we owe that to the hard work of volunteers.”

The Star has made several unanswered requests for a breakdown of those fundraising events and the amount raised at each.

Speaking to the media Monday, Premier Sandy Silver said that his party has followed all the disclosure rules.

Yukon political parties aren’t required to itemize “other revenue” totals.

Last summer, an Elections Yukon spokesperson noted that other jurisdictions have “more robust or tighter rules” around disclosure.

Silver told media he will work with the party’s new treasurer to disclose more informaiton about the donations.

“You know, we’ve had very successful fundraising,” Silver said.

“The real issue here was that our volunteers did a lot of work.”

In the legislative assembly, the premier suggested White bring the issue of campaign financing reform to the Members’ Services Board (MSB), which is an in-camera committee.

White said that bringing the issue to the board wouldn’t illuminate the issue for Yukoners.

“This board meets behind closed doors, and even though I sit on it, I am not allowed to discuss anything that happens in these meetings,” White said.

White told reporters she isn’t confident a transparent conversation with the board will happen.

“Elections Yukon has made numerous recommendations and they’ve all been discussed in MSB, and the only one that we see in legislation going forward is fixed election dates,” White said.

“I’ve tried to put things on the agenda before – and I appreciate that the premier makes it sound like it’s a possibility – but let’s be honest, it’s not quite that easy.”

Well wouldn't you know it. Some media circles are starting to rumble with Justin Trudeau being nominated for 'Man of the Year' for his astute handling of the economy and moreover the country as a whole. From an unbiased standpoint I'd have to agree.

Has the YuCon Party published their donor list?

Didn't think so.

Liberals are the best and the fake news, fake parties, and fake people are out to get them. JT for four more terms!

Kinda reminds me of our federal finance minister and his mortgages with the Bank of China. If it were innocent, why not be transparent? You’re going to ask us to believe you don’t have records on that money? Oh, please! These games make the whole lot of you look like children.

Hmmm...The National Destruction Party just supported the LPC, avoiding a much needed election.
Some may say but this is regional, territorial even, article on politics Josey.
Too that I say, two cheeks of the same arse...as ideologies go.

Transparency in virtually any politician, is like looking through a ice covered window. Sure some light gets through, but never can you see a thing.
By absolute design, their career is...making ice...to cover our windows.

Yo Woodcutter - The reason Conservatives overcook things is because they like things well-done... Liberals on the other hand, they fry everything... Including themselves.

However, Liberals also like stoned-grilling using only the Left burner or Left sides of course because they never do anything right!
But Lefty-Liberalism just like their cooking preferences can be fatal because the result is toxic!

It was a friend of mine who says he bought thousands of pre stamped Liberal Party envelopes as part of a fundraiser.
He will use them for business purposes and it's a good tax deduction.

This is not a scandal like the envelopes a PM got stuffed with perhaps 300,000 US for pasta business consultation, or was it for light armoured vehicles lobbying or perhaps for a large aircraft purchase.

What is the big deal?! Just tell them! 'Revenue of $20,000 at leaders dinner' etc. Who cares. Saying, "We told you everything we have to tell you', sounds like you are ashamed of something. This would be a non-issue other than the secret keeping and obstinance that 'we don't have to tell you, so we won't.' So smug and arrogant.

Northwestel is another possibility. They got a big contract.

I'll come clean, it was me, I purchased a truck load of hamburgers. Business was good, the company was good and the event was packed. I tried going to the conservative barbecue but they over cooked everything, just like they over cook this issue.

Larry Liberal, What about the approximately 1 and a half million jobs loss over the Liberals handling of the covid pandemic? They only got a half million back to work. What's so great about that? Maybe you should read other news articles instead of left wing.

Yukoners would rather know who provided the fortune for "Sore Loser" Smith's
ridiculous campaign in the last Federal Election.

ALL political parties should be required to disclose the source of any gifts or donations that exceed $200.

Those of us that have a few hundred to donate for income tax reasons have to make a decision. The YP and NDP are leaderless except for their whiners. So this year I and my family have picked Yukon Liberals.

I'll take a wild stab at it. The donation is from ATCO. Watch what happens the next couple of years.

Liberal corruption knows no boundaries. Just look to Ottawa to see how bad it can get.

I have donated to political parties in the past and do not want other parties or the press to know.
It's a small town and best to not let people know your political affiliations

Not saying that it ought not to be itemized, but why the assumption that it came from a single source?

That's the way us Liberals roll. "Go big or stay home." We don't fool around we buy a round.
Liberals have added over 500,000 full time jobs to the Canadian economy over the last two months in the middle of a pandemic. Not bad.

This is a yawn compared to what's happening below 49 ... a sitting president that won't reveal his tax returns, owes nearly a billion dollars to undisclosed sources and siphons money from a secret bank account in China, to name just a few.

The Liberals don't dare reveal 'secret' sources. They owe too many favors everywhere. A 5.00 donation? yeah..Ma Kettle gave us that.. a 100,000 donation? yeah..that's not free.. there is a favor owed...
