Residents poised to vote on green space referendum
Citizens of Whitehorse will likely know the outcome of the green space referendum before bed time Thursday evening.
Citizens of Whitehorse will likely know the outcome of the green space referendum before bed time Thursday evening.
Robert Fendrick, the city's director of administrative services, said this morning unofficial results of the referendum will be available by as early as 8:30 p.m.
'We're going to broadcast results on WHTV ... results will also be available on our website,' he said in an interview.
Thursday evening's results, Fendrick added, will be unofficial.
Though unofficial results rarely if ever differ from official results, he said, it will take a few weeks before official results can be declared.
Thursday's referendum is a vote on whether to adopt or reject Bylaw 2006-11, often referred to as the planning study bylaw.
Bylaw 2006-11 requires all developers, either government or private, to draft a development planning study, including a map which outlines where green space will be located.
Residents in the vicinity of the development will then vote in a plebiscite on the green space map to see if it's supported by local residents.
The plebiscite is not binding on council and will act as more of a public opinion poll.
There are two polling stations which will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. where eligible voters can cast their ballot.
The Canada Games Centre will be a polling station for all voters whose residences are above the clay cliffs.
The Royal Canadian Legion at 306 Alexander St. will be the polling station for all residents who live below the escarpment.
According to city information: 'To vote in the referendum you must be an eligible elector in the City of Whitehorse. An eligible elector is a Canadian citizen who will be 18 years of age or older on June 22, 2006; and has been a resident of the City of Whitehorse for a period of one year as of June 22, 2006.'
