Report proves McPhee should resign: Dixon

The Yukon Party is calling the first report into the Hidden Valley School sexual abuse scandal “stunning.”

“In a stunning indictment of the Liberal government’s handling of the serious matter at Hidden Valley Elementary, a report from lawyer Amanda Rogers confirmed Tracy-Anne McPhee knew about the incident in 2019 and 2020,” the official Opposition said in a statement.

“The report confirms she failed to inform parents or her cabinet colleagues of the incident and resulting charges.”

“This report makes clear what the vast majority of Yukoners already believe: that the now-deputy premier should resign from cabinet over the mishandling of this matter,” said leader Currie Dixon.

“As the former minister of Education, she is ultimately accountable for the inadequate response to this. Furthermore, as minister of Justice, she failed to inform parents and her colleagues when she learned what had happened.”

In the statement, the Yukon Party pointed out “the report confirmed that McPhee was informed of the situation in multiple briefing notes provided to her in November 2019 and in March 2020.

“The report also confirms that despite being the attorney-general, she failed to make the premier or her cabinet colleagues aware of a legal matter of profound significance and importance.

“Even when McPhee handed the Education portfolio to the current minister (Jeanie McLean) in May 2021, she still neglected to inform her colleague.”

Dixon added, “All along we have heard from parents that they want answers and accountability.

“While this report provides some explanations, there are still several unanswered questions, and even worse, zero accountability.

“McPhee must resign, plain and simple.”

Last Thursday, the Yukon Party called on the government to honour the commitment to release the report by the past Monday – which it did that evening

The Yukon Party said it still supports a fully independent public inquiry that dates back to when the school’s convicted former education assistant was first hired, “and includes an examination of the decisions made and direction provided by the deputy premier, the premier, and political staff.”

The NDP, meanwhile, said the report “highlights systemic failures within the department to act on the severity of the situation, as well as the minister’s lack of interest in the matter.

“The successive governments have left the Department of Education in shambles. Sadly, this level of systemic and repetitive failures comes as no surprise,” said NDP Leader Kate White.

The report clearly states the “Yukon Department of Education (YDE) had a responsibility to inform parents of this serious incident,” she said, as well as “the mere fact that the RCMP had commenced a criminal investigation did not absolve the YDE of the responsibility to communicate with parents.”

White added, “The report also highlights that the first abuses went undetected because the perpetrator blamed his lack of experience working with vulnerable children and his lack of training as an excuse for concerning behaviour.”

She continued, “We’ve not only heard from the report, but also parents, schools and EAs alike that school staff are lacking the specialized training and knowledge they want and need about special education, and that more supports, funding and training are needed. It speaks volumes to the failure of successive governments to listen to parents and educators about what is needed to improve our education system,” said White.

“The report is clear – in 2019 and in 2021, the government failed parents and failed children.

“We know that proper supports are not in place, we know that counsellors are needed and physical changes need to be implemented in all Yukon schools.

“The government knows as well – when will they act?”  asked White.

The NDP leader said in late 2021 she doesn’t believe McPhee should remain a member of the cabinet.

@Time for NOL: Perhaps you should spend some time looking up a few basic facts about the Canadian Constitution, and less time on YouTube, before joining the American Sov Citizens group and flogging nonsense. Even a cursory read of those links would tell a person of average intelligence that it's all just gibberish.

Maybe the parents should file NOL's against McPhee if she refuses to step down. Put liens on her properties, vehicles etc. Maybe it is time politicians were shown they are not as untouchable as they think they are.

I guess Premiere Sandy Silver places loyalty to his Ministers before right or wrong over integrity and accountability. Minister McPhee is has no integrity and is willing to take the Premiere down with her. The Premiere is stupid enough to let her do it - go team.

Kate made her bed and now has to lie in it. Regardless of whether she is sometimes correct, I am tired of hearing her piffle on with her focus depending on direction of wind at any given time. Time she moved off the fence before a picket becomes embedded.

It appears that Mr. Silver is hoping to ride this storm out without following the desires of the public to remove Ms. McPhee. Over the past week we have seen what happens when Liberal leaders do not pay attention to the people they took an oath to serve.
Or perhaps we are experiencing this report differently than the Liberal Cabinet members?

This is an embarrassment and a slap in the face to all Yukoners… Especially our children. No accountability? Really - Because when they want to spin it they always find a scapegoat to fire!

As the leader of the Department of Education McPhee is absolutely responsible and so is Sandy Silver!
No policy?!?! GTFOH! These people are in charge of our most valuable commodity (our children) and there was never any thought given to such policies?

I agree, this is the frustration of every Yukoner - No accountability, free rides to the pension line! This is unacceptable and it has been for a long time.

This is the nepotistic nature of the Yukon! Friends got friends backs…

Yukoner. Kate also has a golden goose to protect. And she knows she will never form a government. So, she will make sure the Libs stay in power for the next 4 years and keep the game going. Gotta protect that salary and pension. That's how politics works. We the people gave them too much power and now we're stuck with them.

Joe Who? "When did a Yukon Party minister ever resign when asked?" Maybe it's because they never did anything wrong to have to resign.

She will resign. But not until her pension is assured. She ain't giving up that golden goose.

I think all of the party leaders should resign.

The lawyer who advised against sending the letter to all parents of children at the school thwarted the process and he or she should be identified, shamed and fired.

This is an emotional issue for many people/parents and the process failed.

Ok Kate..and Currie..
Time to crap or get off the pot.
You had your chance to defeat the Liberals and you reneged.

There is no doubt in my mind that McPhee needs to step down and so to should the deputy minister responsible for the department. Systemic failures of this magnitude are clearly the result of leadership failings at the very top. McPhee should resign for perpetrating what amounts to a botched cover-up. She was well aware of the details of this case but decided to pubIically place the blame at the feet of the RCMP. To paraphrase her obstructionist response to the general public, "I am a lawyer and I know what's best."

Resign on Feb 2, 2022 at 2:49 pm

Resign. This is not about politics; it's about doing the right thing. And if you stay in the Liberal party, you are just going to drag it down and destroy it. Also get rid of anybody from the Yukon Party who was involved in 2014 onwards as they were responsible for Auclair at that time and did nothing. Resign all of you! Morgan, McPhee and Yukon Party

Well Kate? You are the one keeping these guys in power - time to put your 'vote' where your comments are.

And Sandy? There is this principle called "Ministerial Accountability" not sure if you are familiar with it...Ministers are ultimately responsible for the failings of their departments, regardless of the circumstances - a real leader takes responsibility for the mistakes and actions of their departments, and doesn't make excuses or blame a lack of policy....this lack of policy falls squarely on the shoulders of the former Minister!
Ministers have had to resign over less - even your federal liberals. Clearly, you can make all the excuses for McPhee that you want - but as the Minister for BOTH Education & Justice...AND as Attorney General - she 'knew better' - and as a trained lawyer - she should have ASKED more questions of her officials.
Yes, this public service needs a shake-up, but you have been in power for some time now, and have had time to clean things up...stop blaming previous governments.

But the report doesn't clearly state that Mcphee should resign. The report proves a very simple idea. No one person was responsible. The government legislation worked as it should. Each individual did their due diligence and the bare minimum of what legislation required them to do.

This is the major complaint of every Yukoner. There is zero accountability. This report highlights that. She can't find a single person responsible nor can she say that any one person did anything wrong.
The report highlights ways to improve. BUT. Doesn't say anything about fault.

No responsibility, no humanity, no accountability. A bunch of people saying "well we followed the rules and the process. If the rules and process are wrong, then we're not at fault, the rules and processes are." Anyone "thinking" would know that more had to be done. But when your lips are gagged and your hands are cuffed, what can you expect?

It is clear as day that McPhee failed the kids AND parents of Hidden Valley due to either incompetence of something far more malicious. There is no place for someone like that in politics. Silver keeping her on makes him compliant to the tragedy that befell those children.

What part of systemic does Currie not understand? His previous government did nothing about this. At least Sandy apologized. Yukoners want constructive leadership, not destructive rhetoric. When did a Yukon Party minister every resign when asked? Never!
