RCMP officers responded to a report of males heard fighting followed by what was believed to be the sound of gun shots early Thursday morning near McIntyre Drive in Whitehorse.

Whitehorse RCMP officers, along with Police Dog Services, immediately attended the area.

They located and arrested a male suspect without further incident, police said in a press release issued Thursday afternoon.

The release said a firearm and other evidence were also located.

There were no injuries reported.

Marc Porter, a 33-year-old Whitehorse man, has been charged with four offences under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Porter has been charged with carrying a prohibited weapon, a magazine, without reasonable precaution for public safety.

He’s also been charged with carrying a magazine for purposes dangerous to the public peace, possessing a magazine without a licence and carrying it concealed.

“Just before 1 a.m. (Thursday) morning, Whitehorse RCMP responded promptly, with multiple resources, to a report of possible shots fired in the area,” Insp. Archie Thompson, the Whitehorse detachment commander, said in the release.

“The safety of all Whitehorse residents is a priority for the RCMP.

“We are taking this incident seriously, and ask anyone with any information to please come forward.”

Porter appeared in court Thursday.

No plea to the charges was entered.

Porter was released on bail and ordered to appear again June 16.

@where is the respect...yes that was a bad day in Canadian history.
You know another bad few days in Canadian history (that few ever heard of in the mainstream regurgitation a.k.a the news)?
A flood happened in High River, state actors including police those representing the RCMP took that opportunity to take possession of firearms and ammunition.
They also did that during the fire in Slave lake AB. RCMP chose to destroy all ammunition "gathered" during the High River operation.
Imagine a police force in a alleged free country arbitrarily destroying your property as a matter of "policy"?

Not to undermine the valid but poorly placed point you made, that does not mention the near daily zealotry of policing in Canada, US of eh, and other soon to be 3rd world countries.
Perhaps that is where "the respect" went to, or eroded from my said points to mention but a wee sliver of a very big piece.
It will be interesting to see what playing with guns in town will present for "consequences" between wolves, coyote and now the village gunfighter here today. Did he get his computer taken, hunting "rights" suspended?
Will he? Rhetorical.
Broken trust, google that video...nary a peep of it on CBC, CTV, here' but effin' HUGE breach and epic, epic over reach of the RCMP.

@Cap'n Obvious.....you are partially right however there are no limitations on rounds in a magazine of a 22LR. All others are limited to 5 rounds. Feel feel to correct me if I'm mistaken but a 22LR has no limits and 25-30 round mags are common. As far as an SKS being labelled an assault rifle like it's sister weapon, the AK47, that is debatable since the AK is only illegal simply because it is the most recognizable of all similar weapons. I own a couple SKS's and I love them as they are almost fail proof, cheap ammo and easy to use. I am a fan of open carry but I know that will never fly in this gun scared country. At least there are no limitations to the number of magazines one can have (limited to 5 rounds each. Just have to swap mags 10 times to fire 50 shots.

To clarify, the prohibited device (a weapon by criminal code) was the gun's magazine (what you would incorrectly call a "clip"). If it holds over 10 rounds of whatever caliber ammo it was made for it is itself a prohibited weapon. So, article is correct, though not clear to folks unfamiliar with gun stuff.

Your illegal pistol is less bad under the law than the 13 round magazine you have stuck in it.

So, a pistol under 4 inches with a silencer and a 13 round mag is actually 3 prohibited weapons. Which in the same bag as your brass knuckles, nun-chucks, or fully automatic AK. Or your regular semi-auto AK (shooting the same stuff as a completely non-restricted SKS), for some stupid reason.

Ask away, I'll be here all week.

This guy is shooting at someone within the City Limits. He better get a lot more then the guy did that shot the wolves. We need some consistency.

Is this an overreaction? A fight and a few shots fired.

I say be gentle on the guy with the magazine and start clamping down on impaired drivers and people who text while driving, they are the real criminals.

I'll want to keep this incident in mind, it might be the only way to get the RCMP to attend and take it seriously.

magazine? Am i missing something? on Jun 3, 2016 at 4:18 pm

I'm confused...a magazine? I sure hope that's something more than an every day magazine or my days of reading the Enquirer are over.
