A 400-pound statue of the Virgin Mary has been transported to Carcross after it was discovered in a building in Old Crow.

The statue, which used to adorn the Old Crow church, has been installed in a grotto outside St. John the Baptist Catholic church in Carcross.

Maryanne and Ron Ratz made the arrangments.

Maryanne refurbished the statue and friends and people from the community helped with the grotto.

The Yukon’s Roman Catholic bishop, the Most Rev. Héctor Vila, along with Pastor Marc Lalonde, blessed the statue last Saturday at the church.

The statue was installed in honour of Father Mouchet, who did mission work in Old Crow, including building a church.

As well, he was instrmental in putting the community on the map for cross-country skiing.

Carcross church congregationalists said they are grateful to the people of Old Crow for the statue.

I heard about this first through word of mouth and it truly is a beautiful story. I believe the relocation has more to do with these two great people Maryanne and Ron who made the effort to move an old statue and restore it to beauty. Fr Mouchette was in the priestly order of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate so a statue of Mary is appropriate.

I too found this an odd re-location. Diocese of Whitehorse has at least 8 parishes/missions named in different ways for Our Lady and Carcross as St John the Baptist mission, isn't one of them. Old Crow has always been an Anglican community but Fr. Mouchet was dearly loved & respected there so the choice of Carcross confuses me.

Why not a statue of Father Mouchet in Old Crow? Neither Mary or Carcross had much to do him. This is a poorly concealed effort to give a dying church some credibility.
