Cold weather and an injured nurse have meant Destruction Bay was without a medical clinician Monday and part of today.

This afternoon, a nurse from Haines Junction was scheduled to drive to the community, after Monday's and this morning's cold weather prevented her travel.

As well, an auxiliary on-call nurse from Vancouver is flying up, and is expected to arrive in the community tomorrow.

The Destruction Bay nurse suffered an injury that is being kept private, although Yukon government health officials say the nature of the injury will keep her off of work for a week to 10 days.

Staff at the Kluane Lake School in Destruction Bay confirmed there is a bout of chicken pox going around, which has kept some children home sick from school, and without a nurse.

Pat Living, the spokeswoman for the Health and Social Services Department, said today that in the case of emergencies, there is Telehealth access to nurses in other communities and to emergency doctors in Whitehorse.

"Had anything major happened, EMS is there as well," she said. EMS is the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers, who are on-call in Destruction Bay.

Living said on-call auxiliary nurses routinely come in to the Yukon from Outside to cover nursing stations during scheduled vacation times, and during emergency situations, like in Destruction Bay.

When the weather is cold, most workers are barred from road travel because of the dangerous conditions.
