'Refund' e-mails bogus, RCMP say
Think you have an unexpected tax return coming your way? You might want to think again, and call the cops while you're at it.

Whitehorse RCMP received a complaint earlier this week about an e-mail, purporting to be from the Canada Revenue Agency, offering an on-line tax refund of $386.
According to a police press release, the e-mail links to an "On-line Refund Form" requesting the recipients' social insurance number and date of birth, two key pieces of information used in identity theft.
Only one complaint was made, RCMP spokesman Sgt. Mark Groves said, but more than one Whitehorse resident has received the same e-mail.
Local RCMP have established that Revenue Canada sent out no such communication and that the e-mail originated outside of Canada. Any further investigation into the suspected fraud will be handled in Ottawa.
Investigations into e-mail and telemarketing fraud "are best handled on a national scale," Groves said.
"Rather than us waiting for the phone to ring ... we encourage people to report directly to Phonebusters."
Phonebusters is a national anti-fraud organization affiliated with the RCMP, the Ontario Provincial Police and Competition Canada that acts as an information clearinghouse for reports, evidence and statistics on phone, Internet and mail fraud.
