City council voted Monday to begin the process of recruiting eight community members to sit on the new inclusivity advisory committee the city is creating.
City council voted Monday to begin the process of recruiting eight community members to sit on the new inclusivity advisory committee the city is creating.
In addition to approving the committee’s terms of reference Monday, council also instructed administration to begin the application process for membership on the committee.
Members of council asked at its meeting last week whether specific criteria or metrics will be used to to select committee members, says the administrative report prepared for council.
“Administration noted that a broad lens will be used to select members for the committee which is intended to bring forward perspectives and experience and to represent a diversity of views, rather than seeking members that formally represent any whole groups or specific associations or organizations,” says the report.
It says the terms of reference for the committee notes the importance of committee members bringing to the table the perspective of seniors, elders, women and youth.
Under the advisory committee bylaw, says the report, council committees are expected to represent a balance of gender, culture, youth and older adults.
The draft terms of reference says the purpose of the committee is to promote inclusivity by identifying opportunities for the city to increase inclusivity through its programs and policies.
The committee is to examine and make recommendations on inclusivity issues, and to hear and respond to individuals and non-government organizations on select topics.
As part of its work, the committee will advise council on the implementation of toolkits and resources available through the national Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities, of which the city is a member, says the administrative report.
Administrative support for the committee has been estimated at $100,000 annually for one staff person to be shared with the new housing and land advisory committee.
Depending on the workplan and recommendations of the committee, an additional $80,000 to $100,000 is estimated for potential consulting fees, says the administrative report.
The terms of reference identifies that the purpose of the committee is to promote inclusivity in the city by:
• Identifying opportunities to increase inclusivity through city bylaws, policies and programs;
• Advising council on the implementation of the Coalition of Inclusive Municipalities toolkits and resources;
• Reporting to council on strategic policy issues for achieving progress on inclusivity;
• On select topics, to hear and respond to representatives from community and cultural groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and individuals;
• Provide recommendations on how to improve engagement with community stakeholders; and
• Examine any inclusivity issue that council refers to the committee for consideration.

Clearly a high number of privileged people with silver spoons up somewhere. Potholes and housing ARE important issues, without question. As is people feeling safe and not discriminated against. I'm ashamed to share a postal code with several of you.

As I have stated numerous times before: Work to make everybody equal, dividing people by their religion or sexual preference does not have any bearing on their requirement for shelter or other basic human needs. Inclusivity is only an issue when somebody feels they have not been treated the same as everybody else. So why not treat everybody the same without any special considerations because of what they feel and imagine about anything?

This is ridiculous. Inclusivity should be apart of any planning in this day and age. The terms of reference can be, and should be, carried out by all departments, collaboratively. You don't need a special task force to to that...or committee, or whatever you want to call it...Bu115h1t

I wish council had put this committee on hold and spent this money on opening up the Robert Service campground to deal with the current housing shortage for vulnerable people.

100k could have met the needs of the entire community, as opposed to one group at the expense of all others. And they call this an inclusivity council. Convince us. Or call us bigots and lose the next election, your choice.

@ Mitch
Sorry Mitch but municipal maintenance is not on the agenda for any discussion. It is all about the fluff - you know the things "that really count".

Yes Mitch - Maintenance is included… You can expect the same care and concern we give to each and everyone of ‘your’ tax dollars:
We are having our colourists working on the precise mix of inclusive colours for the potholes. This is why it has taken us so long - We did not want to offend people by using the same old black tar and asphalt mix… With all the bird feeder activity in this city we are anticipating an attempted tar and feathering of city council. But our colourful new, washable with soap and water asphalt formula we’re not as concerned - We will defend democracy in style!
RAINBOW COUNCIL - Strap yourselves into the Rainbow Random Diversifier of Approved Decisions Machine - Laura, Laura, where are you, we got some work to do now! Let’s have some fun and diversify this town!

No support here. No surprise either. With all the issues facing the CoW this IS NOT one anywhere in the top 100! A fluff issue for sure and not worth the time, money or effort. It really shows the priority this council has in looking after even the basic needs of what the city is expected to do.
The outcome is already written - what we will get is more touchy feely nonsense, where we expect to see how the citizens of the city must behave in the new political correct environment. Anyone that has illusions otherwise is misguided. Don't kid yourself, this committee, it's make up and outcome, will be the ban of the town. Woke has arrived...

The great Diversity Perversity beset the public mood with adversity… on Jul 15, 2022 at 9:02 am
Now that’s funny… And in the end the great diversity experiment left the polity in a great paralysis… An inability to do anything… The collective mind seized, and sputtered to a halt… Everything had become ray-cissed and action, and any thought for that matter, itself was an offence to someone else… And the people consumed one another in the great hate… Gnashing teeth shined with vitriolic juices…

I hope the hardworking, fiscally responsible, selfless wizards in our hall...
find the diverse group of rabid lefties and anti-reality advocates they seek.
Of course in that diverse group yet appointed, those with functional cortex’s are not remotely welcome.
Striving for new levels of stupid, it is the CoW way.
A quarter of a million of your dollars, just loaded in the volcano...to be vaporized.
Look forward to the blue hair crew, the junkie advocates and non binary intellectuals lecture the wizards on what they wish happen...before the rubber stamp gets its daily role. SJW Stamping, as per the progressive wizards favourite activity...besides snack runs and sending email jokes.
Is it now policy that using your brain is akin to hate, colonialism, climate change, and supporting the radical right...in that hall -O- blowholes?
Back to the civic safe space now after my participation?

What an absolute waste of our tax dollars and people's time.
Housing issues should be dealt through the OCP framework and hard work by City administration staff and council.

Perhaps a homeless person and some on minimum wage trying to save for a house would be a good addition to the committee.

Inclusivity? Do extra points get awarded for being one of the alphabet people who apply?
Not even out of the gate and this committee is already a farce.
Identity politics is damaging our nation and society.

The only one that would set straight this diversity circus virtue signally BS.
Hey Yukon Liberal! Put your name forward and Pro Science Greenie you to so OJW can tear your arses out!
Just another waste of money that could have been spent on the real important things.
I see more street name changes coming.

What a complete and utter waste of time and money. Pot holes galore, poor snow removal program, getting spending under control, the list goes on and on are the real priorities. Oh, but wait, we have 100k for a committee to advise on 'inclusivity issues' within the city bureaucracy. Give - me - a - break !!!
We certainly have our priorities in order. A housing committee to tell us what we already know and now a touchy-feely committee to make sure we don't hire the best people unless they are woke identified and needing special protection for hiring. That noise you hear is the toilet flushing, yet again...

How did we ever manage in the past, without this committee or any of the other fluff ideas present COW council and admin are dreaming up? $100,000 for admin support and up to another $100,000 for potential consulting fees! I am beginning to be more than disgusted with this blatant stupidity on use of our cash.
