An alleged car theft and burglaries at two homes in the Mary Lake subdivision Monday resulted in a reported vehicle chase involving the RCMP and the arrests of two suspects.

Those individuals had previously been charged with passing counterfeit $100-bills in July.

After an initial call about a vehicle theft Monday morning, the RCMP began to receive more calls about thefts in the Mary Lake area.

“Further calls about break and enters, thefts and suspicious people over the next several hours provided descriptions of similar suspects,” police said late this morning.

“Officers on duty conducted patrols in a variety of areas associated to the suspects, who were not initially located.

“Officers from Whitehorse RCMP general duty, general investigative section (GIS), and Yukon RCMP police dog services (PDS) located and arrested Osheana Kuster and Bobby Ward with assistance from witnesses.”

The pursuit was captured in real-time comments on Facebook after one of the homeowners posted about the incident.

Numerous posts from people said they saw multiple police vehicles moving at high speeds.

Others said they had seen police setting up checkpoints and patrolling with police dogs.

“Looks like the RCMP have someone surrounded near the residences at Wolf Creek campsite,” says one of the comments on the post.

Ward, 40, and Kuster, 25, were charged with seven offences.

Those include vehicle theft, breaking into and stealing from two houses, possession of stolen property valued over $5,000 and running from police.

Ward was also charged with a probation order violation and dangerous driving, according to court documents.

This is on top of charges both face for allegedly using counterfeit currency on July 23.

According to an RCMP press release from July 27, a counterfeit $100-bill had been turned in to police that said “Canad” on the front instead of “Canada”. It was also marked for “motion picture use only.”

This was the second press release from the RCMP warning of counterfeit currency circulating in the community, with the first notice going out on June 22.

Stolen goods from two properties – one on Lupin Place and one on Larkspur Place – included electronics, a fur coat, tools, jewelery and other items, according to court documents.

According to the social media posts, most of the stolen goods were recovered by police.

The stolen car, a Honda Fit, has also reportedly been recovered and returned, according to social media posts.

Social media posts by the people whose homes were broken into applauded the quick work by police in apprehending the suspects and getting their belongings back.

Ward and Kuster appeared in court by video early Tuesday afternoon, and remain in custody.

Kuster will be in court again on Sept. 25, while Ward is to appear on Sept. 27.
