Whitehorse RCMP and bylaw officers handed out 130 tickets during several check stops and patrols through the Thanksgiving long weekend.

During Operation Impact, detachments across the Yukon laid another 60-plus charges, with Carcross alone reporting 14 infractions for driving without insurance, one impaired driver and two charges for minor drug possession.

In Whitehorse officers were surprised to see how many drivers and passengers were still not buckled up, resulting in 32 tickets for not wearing seatbelts.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Don Roberts said the number of seatbelt infractions is bothersome, though there were only two charges of impaired driving through the four days of Operation Impact, which involved several checkstops each day.

While two is still too many, it's long way from 10 and 15 years ago when Rogers said he can remember charging four drivers with impaired in one day, and he and his partner charged up to nine in one day.

Officers also stopped a driver for going 147 kilometres per hour along the Alaska Highway through the 70 km/h zone in Porter Creek.

In addition to the two impaired charges, there were five 24-hour suspensions handed out and five vehicles towed and tickets handed out for driving while prohibited. Three drivers were also ticketed for driving contrary to restrictions, like not wearing eye glasses.

Six Whitehorse drivers were fined $460 each for driving without insurance, five were ticketed for no licence, and five did not have valid registration.

There were 59 speeding violations cited, another seven tickets handed out for various driving infractions and three tickets were issued under the Liquor Act.

In addition to enforcement measures in the city, Operation Impact was also concentrated on the area outside Whitehorse, with patrols to Marsh Lake and along the South Klondike Highway.

Check stops were conducted in Faro and Ross River, resulting in one charge of impaired driving and three other tickets. Pelly Crossing RCMP conducted check stops on each day of the long weekend resulting in one 24-hour suspension, and eight other violations.

Dawson City reported a low volume of traffic violations with only three seat belt infractions, while Watson Lake RCMP reported two impaired drivers, two aggressive drivers, 13 speeders, one seatbelt infraction and 12 other offences, including one 24-hour suspension.

There are way too many people drving without insurance, registration or an actual license.

This should happen more often to try to catch the people that don't want to follow the rules of the road.

Good job to the local police and RCMP that made this a successful operation and I hope to see them on the road again soon.
