Whitehorse RCMP are thanking the public for their response to an emergency landing a small aircraft made last Wednesday afternoon in Whistle Bend.

At approximately  3:50  p.m., Yukon RCMP officers, along with Whitehorse Fire and Protective Services and Yukon EMS, responded to what police are calling “a plane crash” in the subdivision in Whitehorse.

Whitehorse RCMP and Yukon RCMP Traffic Services attended the scene, near the intersection of Casca Blvd and Leota Street, after receiving calls from numerous members of the public.

The two-seater plane had made its emergency landing near Casca Boulevard, with part of the wing blocking the road and sidewalk.

The pilot and passenger had safely exited the plane without injury, and there were no reports of injuries to other people, or damage to vehicles, nearby buildings, or infrastructure.

Responding officers from Whitehorse RCMP and Whitehorse Fire and Protective Services closed the road for about an hour between Mascot Street and Leota Street, and appreciated co-operation from the public while the investigation and safety assessments were ongoing.

The road was reopened several hours later with assistance from the Department of Highways and Public Works.

“Thank you to all who called  911  and provided information while we were en route to this call,” Sgt. Jolene Nason, the Whitehorse RCMP Operations NCO, said in a statement released last Thursday afternoon.

“This was a unique call, and we are thankful that no one was hurt in the event.”

Police reached out to Transport Canada, NAV Canada, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, and Canada Border Services Agency for assistance in the investigation.

“Thank you to all partner agencies, including the other first responders who attended the initial call, for their collaboration in ensuring safety during this incident,” police said.
