If it seems to good to be true, it probably is. Especially if it's about credit card interest rates.

Whitehorse RCMP have sent out a warning to residents to be careful when they receive calls from people looking for financial information.

The warning comes after the detachment received several complaints that local residents are getting calls from a company called MCS, which offers lower credit card rates, police said in a statement.

The caller usually asks to verify credit information such as the current rate of interest paid and credit card number along with personal information such as the residential address.

When they've been challenged by the resident, the callers aren't able to provide the credit card information, it was noted.

'Police advise to be mindful of such phone calls and not share personal information on the phone, even if the caller can provide the credit card number,' the release states.

'Police suggest residents confirm the authenticity of the call by contacting their credit card provider.'

Anyone receiving such a call is asked to note the date and time of the call as well as any other information such as the caller's name and phone number, and report it to RCMP at 667-5555.
