A Pelly Crossing man is facing charges of assault and forcible confinement after the territory's RCMP Emergency Response Team spent about seven hours negotiating to get a woman out of the house Tuesday.

Pelly Crossing RCMP were initially called to a residence at 6 a.m. after receiving a report of an assault, police said Wednesday afternoon.

By the time they arrived on the scene, their suspect had already taken off, police said.

RCMP officers then patrolled the community, eventually finding the suspect's vehicle back at the scene about a half-hour later. He had barricaded himself in the home with a woman.

The local officers then opted to contact the ERT, whose members showed up at 10:30 a.m. and surrounded the property.

'The ERT negotiator established communications with the female in the residence and successfully resolved the situation without incident,' an RCMP statement read, noting the negotiations last seven hours.

No one was injured and alcohol is believed to have been a factor, police said.

Michael Terry Lucas, 42, is charged with forcible confinement and assault. His next court appearance is set for tomorrow.

RCMP Sgt. Roger Lockwood noted the case wasn't random and the two people are known to each other.

In an effort to protect the victim's identity and due to the investigation, further details are not being released.
