Four teenagers were arrested at gunpoint Monday night on Main Street after what appears to be an ill-gotten prank gone sour.
RCMP Sgt. Ross Milward said police received a call at about 9:30 p.m. from a youth at the skateboard park, near the Robert Campbell Bridge, who said he had just had a gun pointed at him through the window of a vehicle.
'Police officers immediately located the vehicle on Main Street, where a high-risk take-down ensued,' Milward reported in a press release he issued Tuesday.
'Police found four female occupants in the vehicle who were arrested without incident.'
Officers recovered a pellet pistol in the vehicle that had been spray painted black, as well as some open liquor, Milward said.
One 19-year-old Whitehorse woman is facing criminal charges of pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public and consumption of liquor in a motor vehicle.
Her identity is not being released, as charges have not yet been officially sworn.
Alicia Tatam, 19, is charged under the Motor Vehicles Act with operating a vehicle without a valid licence, and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle.
Two youth, both 16, are facing charges of underage consumption of alcohol, and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle. Their identities are protected from publication by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Milward explained when officers conduct a high-risk take-down involving suspicions of weapons, particularly firearms, it's conducted to minimize any risk to the officers.
The officers maintain cover behind their own vehicles, have their pistols drawn or are armed with a shotgun. They use their public address system to instruct the occupants of the vehicle to come out one at a time, with hands up, then lay face-down on the ground.
In keeping with standard procedure under those circumstances, the suspects are handcuffed on the ground, while at least one officer continues to maintain armed surveillance over the scene, Milward said.
The sergeant said the vehicle was impounded for 30 days, and that police issued a 90-day licence suspension to the driver.
The four accused are scheduled to appear in territorial court June 28.
