Public walk-in clinic needed, says MLA

The Yukon NDP isn’t letting the Liberal government off the hook when it comes to walk-in clinics and physician recruitment.

The Yukon NDP isn’t letting the Liberal government off the hook when it comes to walk-in clinics and physician recruitment.

Last Tuesday, Vuntut-Gwitchin MLA Annie Blake renewed the call for the Yukon government to establish a walk-in clinic to serve territorial residents who don’t have a family doctor.

The clinic would replace the services of the Riverside Clinic in downtown Whitehorse, which is no longer offering walk-in services for routine things such as prescription renewals.

“(Two weeks ago), my colleague (Emily Tredger) stood in this house and shared the concerns of so many Yukoners who do not have a family doctor,” Blake said.

“(Last) week, we heard from an aging Yukoner who told us that he is giving up on waiting for a doctor in this town and just accepted that he will probably die a few years younger, and a nurse who told us that the number of people coming to the ER (emergency room) with non-emergencies is getting dangerous because they are mixing with very sick people during a pandemic.

“Yukoners agree that something has to change,” Blake said.

“Knowing all of this, why won’t the minister fix this crisis and open a public walk-in clinic?”

Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee once again didn’t address the question directly.

Instead, she provided a lengthy response regarding physician recruitment, shifting the focus of the conversation.

“I’m happy to repeat the answer and to continue with our progress in helping the medical professionals come here to the territory and add to our growing list of very competent medical professionals who serve Yukoners,” McPhee said.

“Honourable Speaker, much of Putting People First and the implementation of polyclinics is all about making sure that every Yukoner has a medical team in place to provide primary health care services that they need. Admittedly, that is future-looking.

“What we learned from Putting People First is that 21 per cent of Yukoners do not, at this time, have a family doctor. This is a national and global shortage.

“To recruit medical professionals, we work through national and online forums and supplement support staff with agency nurses and out-of-territory resources when we can,” the minister added.

“Hon. Speaker, the ‘find a family doctor’ program began in 2019 and, since that time, has not resolved every issue, admittedly. However, we have connected 1,058 people to a physician.”

Blake, however, was having none of McPhee’s explanation.

“Mr. Speaker, there are vacancies in nearly every Yukon community,” she pointed out.

“There are vacancies for nurses in Mayo, Teslin, and Haines Junction. There are also vacancies for mental health workers in Dawson and vacancies for youth and family mental health workers in Haines Junction and Dawson City.

“It is fine to talk about all the great programming and supports in communities, but when there is a revolving door of workers and continuous vacancies, everyone is affected.

“What is this government doing to recruit and actually retain health care workers?” Blake asked.

“As I have said, this is a national and global problem,” McPhee retorted.

“The Yukon is feeling the pinch of having issues around being able to recruit and retain nurses and doctors, as is every jurisdiction in the country.

“As we implement the Putting People First report, we are working to hire additional nurse practitioners and we are meeting with the Yukon Medical Association to address physician recruitment and retention.”

Good idea, there's no shortage of clinics, but there is a shortage of Doctors.
Maybe we could make all clinics have mandatary walk ins, pass that one to the Freedom Fighters.

NDP time to step up and get an election called if you actually believe in all the issues that you have been raising. Otherwise you are just Liberal puppets.

So we just opened a safe injection and supply site. Addictions are a complex mental and physical issue. How many people could have been prevented from going down that road, if they had a family doctor to provide care in the first place? So, the problem that was created by government, needs more government interference? See where I'm going here?

The Yukon government is negligently hiring people from outside all the time, knowing they already can't provide BASIC health care to 9000 residents. I bet McPhee and every Liberal minister has a doctor though!

I dare say the shortage of doctors here has caused more avoidable mortality than C19 ever will in the Yukon. No desire to fix it.

Maybe stop firing unvaccinated nurses and doctors and we wouldn’t have a shortage right now.

It appears McPhee learned to speak parrot talk from Justin Trudeau.

@Ibrian

Maybe you should read up on things before you comment.
You are complaining about a safe injection site and safe supply on the one hand, while praising Annie Blake on the other.
What you fail to realize is that it was Annie Blake and her NDP counterparts that made both of those things happen. The NDP demanded that the Liberals establish them in exchange for propping the government up. If you pay closer attention to politics you will quickly realize that the NDP are much further left than the Liberal centrists.

If I was a doctor, I wouldn't come to the Yukon. The Liberal government is sneaking around trying to force in "Poly" clinics, to rid themselves of half of the doctors we now have. They put a $ amount on my life. (your's too by the way). If Terry were alive you could ask him about the Liberal governments approach to life. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/terry-coventry-hemodialysis-yukon-dead-1.5414637. Frank too had to leave the Territory to live.

I want happy, well compensated doctors and nurses.. Since I pay 48% of my income into taxes, I have a right to demand decent health care.

We need walk in clinics. Just do it.

Absolutely appalling! McPhee and Co do NOT care about Yukoners.
Many residents are suffering and need required care. Emergency overrun with small issues that could be addressed in a clinic. How long before we have a crisis there and those needing emergency care in an accident pushed back or the wait for those with a broken bone, waiting? And those in long term care are suffering. Long term care is a gong show. Never will I want to be in one of those three facilities!
McPhee and Co and many others should be ousted from YK Govt …..

Pretty sad when it comes to this.. no walk in clinic, absolutely madness.. again, the problem is the fact these people have multiple roles to live up to, never giving 100% to either.. and it shows..

Such BS from McPhee. They started a safe injection site and are now providing safe supply.
Those people choose that lifestyle, let them live it.
For the 7000 Yukoners who care about their health we have no one.
Way to stand up MLA Annie Blake, Happy you won the seat.
