Prowling bruin prompts officials to close Dezadeash campground
The Yukon government has closed the Dezadeash Lake Campground on the Haines Road until at least Monday.
The Yukon government has closed the Dezadeash Lake Campground on the Haines Road until at least Monday.
In a statement this morning, Environment Yukon said the closure is due to a grizzly bear in the area.
"Campground users should ensure all garbage is placed in the bear-resistant garbage cans provided and latched securely,” it's noted.
Environment spokesman Dennis Senger said conservation officers are in the area today to remove all traces of food and garbage that may be attracting the bear to the area and to also install a trap.
The situation will be reassessed on Monday to determine if the campground can be reopened.
Meanwhile, Parks Canada also announced this morning that the Slims River West trail and surrounding areas in Kluane National Park and Reserve in Haines Junction will be closed until further notice.
"This is a routine management area closure as a result of bear activity in this area,” notes the statement.
"Parks Canada utilizes area closures for both the protection of park vehicles and bears.”
Officials are also letting campers know they might not get a spot at the Kusawa Lake Campground from July 21 to July 26, when the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations host their general assembly (GA) there.
"It is anticipated that GA participants will use all campsites,” it's noted on the Environment Yukon website, though it also adds that the boat launch will be open for public use during the GA.
