Promise of timely high school has been broken: NDP

What bothers NDP MLA Jim Tredger the most about the new F.H. Collins Secondary School delay is the fact that promises were made but they're not being fulfilled.

What bothers NDP MLA Jim Tredger the most about the new F.H. Collins Secondary School delay is the fact that promises were made but they're not being fulfilled.

"Just over three months ago, on the eve of an election, the premier and then-Education minister unveiled a self-congratulatory sign at the site of the new F.H. Collins School,” Tredger said this week of Premier Darrell Pasloski and then-minister Patrick Rouble.

"The government told Yukoners that the new school would be completed by 2013,” said Tredger.

The government announced Monday that the new, $50-million-plus high school will not be completed until 2015 — two years later than the government promised in a ground-breaking ceremony earlier this fall.

Construction will begin in the spring of 2013, instead of next spring.

Representatives from the Departments of Education and Highways and Public Works said late school designs, the complexity over gym construction and and a longer than expected construction period all led to the anticipated two-year delay.

Tredger, a former teacher and principal, said he's "very disappointed” in the department, and he knows students and teachers who are disillusioned as well.

"At last (school) year's graduation, they said it would be the last graduation in that building,” Tredger recalled. "Again, it's been put off.”

Tredger, along with interim Liberal Leader Darius Elias, hope the delay means officials will reconsider their decision not to replace the trades wing. This wing is the only part of the building which will not be replaced.

It was made clear at Monday's press conference that the trades wing would remain.

Sandra Henderson, the chair of the F.H. Collins school council and a retired educator, told the Star today she had no comment other than she believes the delay stems from different ministers working on the project since planning began.

Take the time to do it right.

The NDP wants to rush into things so mistakes will be made to blame the government.

The trades wing is the one part of the school that was extensively renovated recently, including a state-of-the-art ventilation system. It would be a waste of money to replace it now. The NDP and Liberals are well known for wasting taxpayer dollars based on uninformed decisions, that's why they were defeated. This is just another good example.

Try to be an meaningful Opposition, instead of displaying crass partisan tactics. You insult our intelligence.
