Premier Dennis Fentie's jaunts around and outside of the Yukon cost taxpayers more than $87,000 in the last fiscal year.
For the 2003-04 fiscal year, which wrapped up March 31, Fentie's spending on travel inside and outside the territory for himself, staff and MLAs on his behalf reached $87,707.
That total is broken down as follows:
-
$5,864 for Fentie's travel within the Yukon;
-
$35,872 for Fentie's travel outside the territory;
-
$257 for MLAs travelling on the premier's behalf in the Yukon:
-
$8,553 for MLAs travelling on premier's behalf out of the territory;
-
$13,091 for staff travel in the Yukon;
-
$24,070 for staff travelling outside of the Yukon.
However, Fentie's travel bill does not reach the one handed to Yukoners by former premier Pat Duncan in her final full year at the helm, 2001-02.
In that year, the ex-Liberal premier spent $96,400 for her own travel inside and outside the Yukon along with that of her staff and MLAs on her behalf.
In total, the Yukon Party cabinet spent $189,146 tripping around the territory and beyond.
The Duncan regime spent $211,812 for travel in 2001-02.
That cabinet had seven members, like Fentie's crew.
In its last full year, the NDP government of Piers McDonald spent $109,232 for excursions. McDonald had six cabinet ministers, including himself.
In 2003-04, the big spender outside of Fentie was Community Services Minister Glenn Hart, with $23,143.
The other ministers' travel tabs are:
-
Archie Lang, Energy, Mines and Resources, $20,774;
-
Elaine Taylor, Tourism and Culture, $18,208;
-
Peter Jenkins, Health and Social Services, $15,113;
-
Jim Kenyon, Environment, $14,592;
-
John Edzerza, Education, $9,609.
