Premier Ranj Pillai said Wednesday he’s “deeply saddened” by last weekend’s passing of Vuntut Gwitchin elder Robert Bruce Jr. at the age of 74.
“He was a respected leader and a beloved member of his community (Old Crow) who played many important roles during his life,” Pillai said.
“Robert Bruce Jr. dedicated his adult life to preserving and promoting the culture, language and traditions of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.”
Bruce served as chief of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation from 1992 to 1996 and as an NDP MLA from 1996 to 2000, including being the legislature’s Speaker, Pillai noted.
“During his time as chief 30 years ago, he signed the Vuntut Gwitchin Final and Self-Government Agreements, which paved the way for greater autonomy and prosperity for his people,” the premier said.
“Robert Bruce Jr. was a source of wisdom, guidance and inspiration for all who knew him. He will be remembered for his resiliency, generosity and commitment to his community,” Pillai added.
“He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and community.
“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation and all those who mourn his loss.”
