Premier, ministers greet first vaccine shipment

The first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Whitehorse on Monday evening.

By Tim Giilck on December 29, 2020

Revised - The first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines arrived in Whitehorse on Monday evening.

The 7,200 doses were flown to the city and turned over to government representatives.

They included Premier Sandy Silver, Health and Social Services Minister Pauline Frost and Community Services Minister John Streicker.

“The first shipment of the Moderna vaccine arrived safely in Whitehorse (Monday),” Frost said in a media release.

“This is a turning point in Yukon’s fight against COVID-19 and is a positive way to end 2020.

“I can assure Yukoners that we are ready to start rolling out the vaccine very soon. A team of dedicated health professionals is undergoing training on how to safely store, handle and deliver the vaccine.

“This training will ensure that they can safely administer the vaccine to eligible Yukoners,” the minister added.

The vaccine shipment is being stored at an undisclosed location.

The federal government is absorbing the costs of the national vaccination program, with no direct charge to recipients of the shots.

Frost said the first vaccinations will “start next week guided by our vaccine strategy.”

The start date was later clarified to the coming Monday, according to Matthew Cameron, a communications manager with the cabinet.

“We will be offering vaccines to our highest priority groups, starting with long-term care residents and staff,” Frost said.

“We anticipate further shipments will arrive in January.

“Yukon will receive enough doses to vaccinate 75 per cent of the eligible adult population in early 2021,” she said.

Frost emphasized that the current health precautions dealing with the pandemic must continue for an undetermined amount of time.

“Although the vaccine’s arrival is incredible news for Yukon, we need to continue practising the Safe 6 and wearing a mask,” she said.

“We cannot let our guard down and must continue to be vigilant against possible spread of the virus.”

Silver called the arrival of the vaccine “great news” in a social media post.

Currie Dixon, the leader of the Yukon Party, said Tuesday “we are pleased to learn that the first 7,200 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have arrived in Yukon. Administration of the vaccine is now entirely in the hands of territorial officials and we are eager to see the rollout progress.

“Originally, the premier had been very clear that it was the Liberal government’s preference to have all vaccines delivered at once, not in dribs and drabs,” Dixon added.

“The most recent delivery of 7,200 doses is the first of many yet to come, so we are curious what has changed and why the premier no longer thinks we should receive the vaccine doses all at once.”

No one was available for comment at the Yukon NDP offices.

The territory currently has 60 cases of COVID-19 documented. No active cases have been discovered for more than a week.

The Northwest Territories also received a vaccine shipment on Monday.

Meanwhile, Nunavut Health Minister Lorne Kusugak has extended that territory’s public health emergency until Jan. 7.

All existing measures under the public health emergency order remain in effect, he said last Wednesday.

See a complete review of this year’s COVID-19-related events in the territory.

The feds would have given us exactly the same number of doses even if my cat was the Premier.

Oh, Steven. That’s so cute. Applying the rules of the schoolyard to the real world. There’s no surrogate mommy here for you, Big Guy. The transference of your lack of emotional resilience onto others and your hypocrisy are at all time highs.

Abuse? Seriously? This is a voluntary space. You can stop reading at the end of the article. Next, the website will need a banner over the comments section warning that it might not a ‘safe space’. Pathetic.

Political thought, discussion and commentary are mark of an educated citizenry. Dissent is s a mark of diversity. Verbal disagreement the mark of civilization. It is because of people like you that draw conclusions about someone’s entire character based on a single political viewpoint that people hide their names. You are the dangerous one, Steven. Admit it, you’d gladly silence our voices if you could. History tends to treat those folks as the bad guy, just FYI. If everything you want is progressive and everything you don’t want ends with an *ist then you may want to re-examine the definition of Freedom of Expression and Hate Speech. When you’re done wiping with the Charter, that is. Oh, and by the way, have you ever shed any blood for your rights or the rights of others? Probably not, eh? Would hurt too much. It’d be scary. Probably not worth risking your super unique and important self. Yeah, no worries, don’t really need those anyways as you have so much personal experience living without them, right?

To be clear, I welcome all dissent, argument and criticism. So long as it has got something more substantive to it than the juvenile level you’re playing at.
Bell’s ringing, you can go back out an play now.

Pushing anti-Russian propaganda, are you? Shameful.

As for trusting CBC "a lot more than RT", you really need to give your head a shake. CBC is as much an arm of Western intelligence agencies and imperialism and capitalism as RT is an arm of Russian "disinformation".

In my view, RT gives much more nuanced reporting on almost any topic compared to CBC. But, you simply are a fool to trust any news outlet to be unbiased and objective.

To Matthew Sills: RT does stories on topics that CBC never mentions, because they run counter to the official story line. RT’s reports on world issues have been corroborated by many other news agencies. No need to go into a flap because the word “Russia” is in there. The key is to look at various news sites to get a more objective picture.

For those who visit several international independent news sites, it is obvious that in comparison CBC has fallen very low into the propaganda dumps for the past few years. Its reporting is incredibly biased and bordering disinformation by omitting reports on key events that offset the official storyline. I only check CBC now to see where the latest propaganda is at. These days it seems to be under the total control of big pharma.

RT was obviously paraphrasing some of the LA Times article’s content, and overall they did a good summary. Here’s one excerpt from the LA Times article: “Respondents to the Kaiser Family Foundation survey who said they probably wouldn’t get the vaccine said they worried about side effects; they lacked trust in the government to ensure the vaccines were safe; they had concerns about the role of politics in the development of the vaccines; or they believed the dangers of COVID-19 had been exaggerated.

“In online forums, some healthcare workers throughout the country have expressed frustration over going first — a status some have associated with experimentation.”
https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-12-31/healthcare-workers-refuse-covid-19-vaccine-access

Why isn’t CBC reporting on this at all?
Fact is, this vaccine has had serious effects on several people, e.g. Bells Palsy, severe allergic reactions, etc. Big Pharma made sure they have zero liability for their vaccine’s ill effects. The costs of adverse reactions are all paid by the taxpayers.

Steven, this "photo op" as you put it was taken by a prominent local professional photographer. He was originally credited with the photo in this article, but the Star has since changed that.

Now, you're probably right about the right wing nut jobs bitching about being kept in the dark if there was no communication, but they didn't need to drag a professional photographer out to the airport to have a picture to provide the news media.

Also, some people are rightfully upset about the fact that the Premier, Minister Frost and Minister Striecker felt the need to show up to help unload the shipment, but haven't shown the foresight to make sure these vaccines are being administered ASAP. Those doses could have been sent to Quebec or Ontario and actually saved some lives while we waited another week for a different shipment, but they're still sitting in a freezer at an undisclosed location.

NWT started vaccinating before New Year's, why couldn't we? Send the shots to Whistle Bend and Copper Ridge Place and the LTC facilities in the communities and get the shots in people's arms. I'm sure the nurses there are qualified to get the job done. But the Liberals claim that the plan wasn't ready. That training has to take place. Last time I looked, the Yukon has always taken pride in the fact that as a jurisdiction, we are small and nimble and able to react in ways that big bloated bureaucracies just simply can not.

So, I guess Sandy has turned the Yukon Government into a big, bloated bureaucracy that can't even organize the rollout of a vaccine they've been handed on a silver platter. No pun intended.

@ Steven: It never ceases to amaze me that writers like Steven, along with others of his ilk, like to pass along disparaging remarks/comments about other writers. It is a sad commentary to all when an individual feels justified and entitled to stoop to such a level. It shows how narrow minded the person is. Rather than an argument based on something substantive he feels it more appropriate to lash out with verbal abuse. It speaks volumes about those that think this type of behaviour is worthy of being published.

One does not have to agree with another individuals comments. A counter argument, or comment, is fine. Let's stay within the limits of what we as society expect as freedom of speech without resorting to name labeling simply because you don't agree.

The people in this "photo op" are outside. They are 6 ft apart. There is no problem. And if there was no photo op, all you negative commenters would complain that the government is "keeping things secret from you" or you would suggest the vaccine never even arrived at all. You all just like to bitch and complain about anything and everything. The same pseudonyms, on every article, every day. I wish I had that much free time!

I wonder how many other people's lives have been made worse by all you knuckle-dragger's negative comments. People with existing anxiety disorders, the elderly, the sick or infirm... people who will get even more scared when half-assed theories are thrown out by the right wing nutjobs. But as long as you have your anonymous platform to vomit out fear and insecurity, it's all good, right?

And don't forget the politicians, who are people too. Sure, they signed up for this, the responsibility of it all... but they didn't sign up for this level of abuse. You wouldn't put up with it, so why do you expect them to? Just think about how you would feel in their shoes. But oh, that's right, if you were in their shoes the territory would be running perfectly, just like it did 5 years ago. What a joke. I guess that's why you were all voted out.

So to all of you anti-vaxxers: I sincerely hope that you are all at the back of the line, on the last day the vaccines are handed out, or that you don't show up at all. But of course there's no way we'll know, because you're all using fake names on here. Chances are, you'll be the first in line, then complain that you didn't get your shot fast enough, and that will somehow be the government's fault too.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The RT article uses an LA Times article as a reference point, and that article presents a more measured discussion of vaccination hesitancy amongst health workers in LA county. The quotes you reference are from the RT article and are nowhere to be found in the Times article and are unattributed in the RT article. Promoting Russian propaganda does not serve any of us well. New Year's Day: Moderna arrived in the Yukon 6 days ago...still none distributed, and when I emailed HSS, they responded that staff still needed training and work on the distribution plan. I also asked when the Convention Centre would open, and the response was that it was 'some weeks away'. I saw Premier Silver and Dr. Hanley say on their last few streamed reports that the 'plan' was ready to go. Apparently not.
Meanwhile, N.W.T. got their Moderna just 2 days ago....and gave their first shots today, to elders in LTC.
Yukon has only 7,500 shots this shipment, which will do 3750 people. We have only 5 LTC homes, including a small one in Dawson City, and the rest in Whitehorse.

GET MOVING, Yukon!! You have had TEN MONTHS to get a plan figured out. Yukon has only 42,000 people, and that includes children, and those who cannot/will not take the vaccine.
You have had this now for 6 days and haven't given one shot.

In the meantime, NWT has begun...

So some time next week, they will begin, somewhere for some people. Stay tuned for updates, such as they are.
So the next photo-op I expect to be Minister Frost or the Premier getting their dose inserted into their arm - no wait, it's all about the people so perhaps a community elder will be nominated to be the first for the historic photo.

Matthew,
I agree that there are many causes for deaths. I also believe that we should take steps to minimize deaths that result from all of these various causes.
However, we shouldn't abandon all steps against Covid-19 because you feel that there isn't enough is being done against to prevent other causes of death. That's like saying we should stop investing in cancer treatment/research because there isn't enough being done for those with AIDS.

Yes, the poison in the food we eat is a huge issue. However, this is an incredibly complex issue with many, many variables. The solution to the Covid-19 issue is much simpler and can be accomplished by ordinary folk: wash your hands, distance, etc.

This government is so casual about their "vaccine strategy" it hasn't even bothered to update it the website to acknowledge that the Moderna vaccine was approved, when approval supposedly was the trigger to start the process. In fact, the whole strategy is so mushy as to be meaningless as a reference, which is something of a specialty to the territorial Liberals, it seems. The conversation around vaccine strategy is shifting by the minute elsewhere, but you wouldn't know it here.

The UK and Israel are going 24/7 with vaccinations. Here, despite all of the exhortations to us that "COVID doesn't take Christmas off", the medical system does. Maybe it has something to do with the impressive way people have been complying with the health measures here. This government has nothing to complain about in that area, but if it means they feel they can treat the vaccine like some kind of incidental perk that they'll get around to when they have a minute, that compliance might be working against us.

Maybe we don't have any active cases, but I don't want to wear a mask one minute longer than necessary, and we've already given up a lot. I feel we're in real danger of spending so long in this condition that it's becoming baked in.
I am honestly shocked as to the lack of urgency around this shipment, even as others in the provinces are raising the alarm about similar delays. "...vaccine is incredibly useful when it's in people's arms, but it's no good to us at all in the freezer."

You’re not seeing Hanley here because his role in 2021 is to deliver the bad news. And there’s a ton more of that on the way. They already know, they just want to tell you in a timeline that they think you can handle. Public health is only fractionally concerned with your individual physical health and is more so about manipulating your perception of your health to maintain public cohesion.

First, a slow let-down about the vaccine hype. Then briefings on the new normal that’ll last most of the decade. Then a rush of ineffective social programming. Then austerity measures. Then a change in government. Then they’ll finally open things up to business, industry and innovators to save them and create new opportunities. Now, they could skip all that malarkey in the middle and save us all the debt from their bad ideas, but they won’t. We’ve been doing it this way for a while now, patriarchal, and I don’t think anyone currently in power is brave enough to look history, hard cold numbers and the real greater good square in the face. The greater good these folks want is the one that gets them re-elected.

Dear Overlords;
We totally get it. We really do. It’s quite simple really. Your purpose is to eliminate all the small independent businesses from the land entirely and consolidate your control of the people! It’s really not all that complicated.

Eventually there will be no more stores at all in the traditional sense, just distribution centers. Small business owners are generally an unruly lot anyway with strong opinions and they are the largest supporters of individual rights and freedoms and annoying populist candidates who ignorantly get into politics and just mess with your agenda for the betterment of the planet through population reductions and the end of ridiculous personal freedoms.

And getting them out of the way is paramount to the greater good.

The current financial system consisting of cash and bank accounts is running out of runway and needs to be reset to a social credit system like china’s where those who behave are rewarded with luxuries like food and apartments and clothes and those who misbehave cut free from societies benefits, and the best way found so far to do that is through the distraction of a terrible population-decimating plague or if you can’t get one of those going, well the fear of one may have to do for now.

Eventually, the local bank will be a thing of the past as credits will be deposited in your global account in your name hashcode, and your supply allocation of life-sustaining soy will be available for a certain number of days so no worries about money and agonizing personal choices anymore. Won’t that be neat?
But meanwhile unfortunately there is bound to be some discomfiture as jobs are lost, businesses fold reducing product selection for the buying public, mortgages and rent go unpaid, roofs go unrepaired, beggars roam the alleys hungrily and conspiracy theorists keep pointing out annoying truths.

But you dear overlords, need not fear, even though you are made of flesh and blood like the rest of us, as long as you can keep the population pacified with promises of pandemic-slaughtering vaccines and large gobs of money pumping down the pulsating supply tubes so generously fed by Justin and Catherine.

A mega-project or two replacing things that already exist, especially in locations where the action is seen by the most, boosts the nation’s GDP and always gives the impression that things are humming along nicely and you can continue to move toward your ultimate goal of controlling the thinking, decisions and actions of the underclass for the betterment of the planet. It’s all for the greater good of course. Reducing the carbon footprint of the filthy underclass is everything after all!

So we totally get it. Carry on. It’s all for the greater good. Keep telling yourselves that.

Please, less photo ops, and nothing but needles in arms until we are over this.
I don’t care who wants to claim the credit for only doing their job, get over it, and get on with it.

@Max Mack, "Compliant journalists", I hear that. The vaccines are going to sit in storage for a week, and everyone is taking Christmas week off, just exactly what the Ontario government is getting raked over the coals for. Yet journalists here are just holding the microphone and taking dictation. Liberal MPs get on the CBC and hold monologues, saying exactly what they intend to say and ignoring questions. Basically the same pablum that this writer so faithfully transcribed.

I am very surprised that they're only starting the training now. I thought that's what the dry run was all about. The dry run that they have not shared more than 10 words about, by the way. The vaccine shouldn't even have been delivered if they're so unready they're sitting on it for a week. They should be embarrassed, not euphoric, when people in other provinces are in such dire straits.

This self-satisfied government should take care. Maybe their cocky, secretive attitude hasn't bought them much goodwill they can ride through the inevitable bumps in the road. Sitting on the vaccine for a week while they "train" the people they've been saying could handle this, because, flu shots, is just one, and it's right out of the gate. Why is the media giving them a pass?

We've known about getting the vaccine for weeks, and we're not ready to put it into people's arms tomorrow morning? What a joke. This government is incompetent and couldn't plan a birthday party, let alone a mass vaccination of the population. Also, has anyone noticed Dr Hanley's absence? Where is he? Shouldn't he be answering to this failure? I know I won't hold my breath....

Judging by the name attached to the photo credit, you can bet your behind there was a whole photo shoot done in order to "capture the moment".
It is an historic moment to be certain, but I'm not sure it warrants a professional photo session.

Libs will never miss a photo op.
Let's get those vaccines into 7200 arms ASAP.

We're being strung along with a carrot forever out of reach, because they keep moving the goal posts. People wake up. It's all about vaccine salesmen cashing in from our desperation to get out of lockdown:

“@BillGates on Covid: "Even through 2022” we should be prepared for life to not return to “normal”
https://dailycaller.com/2020/12/14/bill-gates-cnn-life-return-normal-2022-coronavirus/

Now these salesmen are saying that the vaccine doesn't provide immunity. So what is the point?
How does Bill Gates get to push his vaccine marketing agenda? Fact is, the Bill and Melinda Foundation is the second biggest funder of WHO (right after the USA). Yet our politicians are taking their lockdown & vaccine marching orders from the WHO. How can they pretend to not see this obvious conflict of interest?

There is no justification for these covid restrictions. Remove all restrictions NOW.

So the Guberment is going to push this USELESS vaccine. It is now totally useless because the virus has MUTATED!!!! Be prepared for the statement from top officials in about 2 weeks when all the first round shots are out. "Sorry people but the virus mutated so this vaccine is no good. Unfortunately, we will have to keep everybody in lockdown for another year or two until we can come up with a new vaccine for this strain....hopefully it doesn't mutate again"

I am not an anti-vaxxer. If I was to go to a malaria-rich zone, I would gladly accept vaccination for malaria.. This however, is not a vaccine. It is an experimental DNA altering slurry which is causing around 2 percent of victims to experience severe adverse reactions and/or death and that is only with the first shot. As time rolls on, you will be recalled for booster shots or whatever they will be called and become a virtual heroin addict with your humanity forever altered. If you think Bill "Needles" Gates is here to help you really need to watch the video where he openly admits to his desire to rid the world of a significant percentage of the humans (such as you) on planet earth. Your body your choice, isn't that what they all used to say?

Why bother? The new “mutated” virus is already here and many medically qualified sources are questioning the efficiency of this virus on the original Covid-19... Now we got Covid-19 3.0 spreading. Cue the carnival music... Step right up... Win your prize!

FFS! SMH! And a big round of ROFL... Indefinitely, indubitably... ROFL!

Nothing like "a good news story" to bring out the comments from trolls, conspiracy theorists, wanna-be politician but wouldn't get the vote Jacksons and Wales...

Thanks Minister Frost and others for putting in the effort to help Yukoners have options, choices with access to medications. We are all lucky to live where we do and have the systems we have. Ignore the negativity of the few.

Some perspective for you all...

0.0004% is the total deaths of Canadians due to Covid..
15,000÷38,000,000 give or take of course

Is that worth the $400+B they've printed? Worth the countless small business' shut down? Worth throwing out the Charter of Rights for? Worth emptying peoples savings accounts? Worth higher taxes?

"Frost emphasized that the current health precautions dealing with the pandemic must continue for an undetermined amount of time."
And, as usual, our compliant journalists give Frost a pass. Why an "undetermined amount of time"? We were told the vaccine would be the solution, right?
You think all those people working for Hanley and the "modelers" can't figure out when 75% of Yukoners will be vaccinated?
People have suffered long enough. End the fake emergency! Give us a timeline!

I understand that the vaccine does not stop you from getting Covid nor does it stop you from spreading covid if you do get it. What it does is reduce your chance of getting very sick and dying.
From my understanding, we will have to continue wearing masks and social distancing until a certain percentage of the population is vaccinated. What I want to know is what percentage of the Yukon needs to be vaccinated before we can get back to normal. Maybe if we knew that, more people would be excited about getting the vaccine so we could reach that sooner.

We’ve known that this vaccine (Moderna) was coming. Now it’s here and Yukoner’s are going to have to wait a week before being vaccinated! Health professionals have to undergo training on how to safely store, handle, and deliver. This is in no way, hitting the ground running! It is a good thing we train police/firefighters etc. before they are needed in action, so these folks here can also try to hit the ground running and be prepared a head of time. Someone dropped the ball on this.

If I get the vaccination, absolutely nothing will change, still mask, still contemplate suicide at 3 a.m., still can't play crib at the Legion, still can't get within 6 feet.. blah blah..that being said.. nothing will change except I will have a sore arm and sick for 3 or 4 days. OK if i DON"T get the vaccination, nothing will change, except I WON"T have a sore arm.. I have to think about this one..I don't like sore arms.
