The Yukon Party has voted to keep the premier at its helm after his leadership underwent a successful review at the party’s annual general meeting Saturday in Whitehorse.
The Yukon Party has voted to keep the premier at its helm after his leadership underwent a successful review at the party’s annual general meeting Saturday in Whitehorse.
About 200 people and delegates from all 19 territorial ridings gathered at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre for the meeting of the party faithful. Their decision means there will be no leadership convention.
“I am humbled and honoured to have the confidence of our party, and earning the right to serve Yukoners in the next mandate,” Darrell Pasloski told the Star this morning.
Pasloski was elected premier in the last territorial election in 2011. It was also his first time elected to public office.
Though he has yet to officially declare his candidacy, Saturday’s successful leadership review is a strong suggestion that the premier will seek a second term.
The numbers involved in the leadership review vote were not released.
Pasloski succeeded Dennis Fentie as the party’s leader in the summer of 2011.
The general meeting also saw a shuffling of Yukon Party executives.
Former treasurer Linda Hillier is now president, taking over from Pat McInroy.
Brittany Dixon, wife of Copperbelt North MLA Currie Dixon, replaced Hillier as treasurer.
Wayne Hrynuik is now vice-president, and Madison Pearson replaced Shirley Ford as secretary.
Pearson, who is 24 years old and currently works in the cabinet office, also co-chairs the Yukon Party youth caucus.
That caucus played a significant role in the day’s events, she said.
“(Myself), Caitlin Irvine, Kelsey Hassard, Blake Buckle – the four of us ran policy and platform discussions. There were a ton of really awesome ideas about stuff we’re doing now and in the future,” she said in a brief interview today.
Pearson noted that there was “a ton of support for our premier as leader,” adding she was excited to see Hillier become party president.
“She’s a wonderful lady, very smart,” she said, noting that outgoing president McInroy was “extremely supportive” of Hillier as well.
Pasloski underscored the fact that now, four high-ranking Yukon Party executives are women.
“I think that speaks a lot about this Yukon Party that we have today,” he said.
The premier commended the youth caucus for its work at Saturday’s event.
“They played a big role in this AGM (annual general meeting), and with all the members, we had a break-out session to discuss ideas around policy and what to put in the next platform.”
As to what will be in that platform, Yukoners will have to wait and see.
“There was some great stuff, and we’ll build on that,” Pasloski said.
“Part of what we’ll build on is our record, through good times and tough economic times.”

Mr. Pasloski is a nice man who ran with the wrong crowd and few of his party will likely be reelected.

"Humbled," well there is always a first for everything! I would say the Yukon Party just sealed their fate in the next election as Pasloski will get the boot right along with the rest of the YP. All good for the Yukon, from my perspective and way overdue.

Now you have the local NDP voting in Edmonton. on Apr 19, 2016 at 8:31 am
You have the NDP wanting to raise income tax, property taxes, wage and price controls of private sector, kill mining, oil and gas development, hydro and create major deficits. Does any one think the Yukon voters wants any of this? NDP's premier in Alberta told the rest of Canada NDP to go pound sand.

You have the local liberals defending in the House the Federal liberals cutting funds on Apr 19, 2016 at 8:26 am
Does anyone think that the Federal liberals driving up the cost of living in the Yukon and killing our economy is going to get votes? Then you have the liberals killing the specialty care home for elders/seniors.
Then you have the liberals going to put on a carbon tax Federally and Locally.

Good decision for Yukon. We need more of the careful balance in government to keep our seniors healthy and jobs for our youth. Keep up the good work.

The Whitehorse Midget Mafia has too much time and money invested in the Pharmacist to allow any changes in leadership.

Joe and Jane, I really don't think you can give an intelligent analysis to that remark.

Newfoundland Liberal Disaster on Apr 18, 2016 at 5:07 pm
Please take the time to look up the budget the Newfoundland Liberal provincial government is trying to pass. Some highlights are a 16.5 cent per litre gas tax increase which will double the gas tax overnight, (average $8 per mid size tank increase) also up to a $900 per person income tax surcharge, increasing the HST there to 15%, that's all in addition to adding a $1.8 billion deficit to Newfoundlands debt. Labrador is saying its remote communities will be hit especially hard by all the tax increases the Liberals are bringing in. People are expressing concern the unprecedented high taxation will drive their young people out of Newfoundland.
There is no way I want a uncontrolled Liberal taxing and spending government like that in this territory. They don't have solutions, all they know is big government, increase taxes and spend, spend, spend.
The Liberals and NDP actually are going to want you to vote for increased fuel taxes in the form of a carbon tax for driving and heating your home in the Yukon. Suddenly getting around the territory and heating your home is not expensive enough already according to them, they want to deliberately make it more expensive for Yukoners to live! Really who votes for that?
I don't like some of the things the Darrell and the Yukon Party have done but compared to the alternatives I'll be voting for him for sure when the time comes.

The YP is done, they will be lucky to get any seats and it is very unlikely that Mr. Pasloski will win his riding.

Another mistake out of a long line of mistakes coming from the Yukon Party.
I hope I am not the only voter that just wants to see them gone.
