Premier, chief physician unhappy with vaccine cutbacks

The tension over how the federal government’s handling of the Yukon’s vaccine supply is ratcheting up.

At Thursday morning’s weekly COVID-19 briefing, both Premier Sandy Silver and Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health, expressed dissatisfaction and frustration over the cutbacks to the Moderna vaccine supplies allocated to the Yukon.

The Moderna company has cut back on the supply of its vaccine due to what it calls production problems. That’s essentially caused a world-wide reduction of 20 per cent in doses for at least this month.

Doses for the vaccine, though, have been reduced by 37 per cent.

Neither man was happy with the math discrepancy, which they said they couldn’t explain.

“I don’t agree with the math,” Silver said bluntly. “I’ll continue to work to get shipments expedited.”

Silver added he still hopes to get the shipments of the vaccine “front-loaded”.

That’s something he has been talking about since before Christmas with little result.

Two weeks ago, Silver said he was “absolutely confident” the shipments would continue in a consistent manner.

Now, the shipments at least for February will be reduced – and the March numbers remain uncertain.

“I’d love to know about the March numbers,” he said.

When he was questioned about whether the government has a backup plan to deal with more supply restrictions, Silver said, “I don’t deal with speculation.”

The supply problems have had an immediate effect on the vaccine rollout in the Yukon.

Hanley and Silver said the general public clinic scheduled to open in Whitehorse on Feb. 10 has been delayed indefinitely until the vaccine supply situation is clarified.

In the meantime, the government will now focus on making sure everyone who has received their first inoculation by the end of this week (Feb. 6) receives their second dose on time.

“We have enough vaccine to “put one in the arm and have one in the freezer,” Silver said. “It’s a temporary setback.”

Hanley spoke with some eloquence on the issue. He said he was disappointed with the need to change plans, and recognizes many people in Whitehorse will be as well.

He said he was looking forward to getting his one inoculation next week, which will now have to wait for an undetermined time.

“It’s a setback, a bump in the road,” he said. “It’s a new year with tough surprises.”

(Silver received his vaccine late last month in Dawson City.)

Hanley remains confident that vaccines will lead the way out of the pandemic here in the Yukon.

He also acknowledged the supply chain difficulties mean the government will not be able to meet its target of having 75 per cent of willing adults vaccinated by the end of March.

It’s been three weeks since any active cases have been recorded in the territory, which is great news, Silver and Hanley said.

As has been their habit, though, they continued to stress there is no opportunity to relax any of the restrictive health measures. Both men expressed some concern with the COVID-19 variants that are popping up around the world.

Hanley emphatically reiterated the virus is not eradicated in the Yukon, despite the dearth of cases.

Public health officials generally point to the 28-day mark without a case as the measuring point for functional eradication of a disease such as COVID-19. Even with the Yukon approaching that benchmark, Hanley refused to entertain the notion.

“We haven’t eradicated it,” he said. “I don’t think we ever will. COVID is hidden but present.”

He pointed to outbreaks in northern British Columbia as a reason to be careful.

“So long as there is COVID in the globe, we can’t say it’s been eradicated. I think it will become a disease that’s always with us.”

Added Silver: “We have no false sense of security. We’re still in the grips of a global pandemic.”

The online and telephone booking system for people wanting to schedule an appointment to receive their second dose will open next week, Silver said.

Currently, the system is not allowing more first appointments to be booked past the end of this week.

Two more charges under the Civil Emergency Measures Act have been laid in the last week.

One was for failing to self-isolate as required, while the second was for refusing to wear a mask.

As of Wednesday, there have been 9,931 doses of the Moderna vaccine administered in the Yukon.

Presumably the LIBgov got enough doses to achieve their definition of 'herd immunity' for the Yukon, so we can end the charade, take off the masks, and everyone get back to work.
If so when will that happen?
If not then what's the purpose for getting shots that will make some of us sick or even die if it's not going to stop the restrictions.
Wake-up LIBgov: Trump is gone, the Plandemic is over, stop meddling in our lives and let people get back to living normally.
Enough is Enough.

Silver doesn't agree with the math, but let's get realistic here.
People in other provinces are dying. Sandy and Pauline felt the need to put on a feel-good press conference in December, and now they can't make good on the promises they made.

Doses haven't really yet been diverted from the Yukon to other jurisdictions, but we should ask ourselves if that's such a bad thing if it does end up happening.
Vaccinate our most vulnerable here in the Yukon and the rest of us can wait. It's likely nothing will change for us up here until the rest of the country has an acceptable percentage of the population with the vaccine in their arm anyway.

With all the variants floating around, I don't see the Yukon's border opening up any time soon, so we may as well get our elders and vulnerable vaccinated and hunker down and let the hot spots down south try and get things under control.

Dr Hanley, thank you! Excellent work. Having enough vaccine to follow up on the first jabs already given is no mistake. Unfortunately, it does temporarily slow down total number of person vaccinated. However, it protects the public investment in those first jabs. Long term play. Good call. Doing it right is the most important. Doing it quickly is second. Finding that balance is the incredible pressure on the Doctor.

Through deep winter now, but the battle of the variants is just beginning. Don’t expect entirely good news through spring, folks. Hope does not entitle success. Be ready to pull up your big kid pants!

Mr. Premier & Dr. Hanley, keep up the good work. We, the majority of Yukoners, recognize and appreciate your leadership and efforts. Best of all, please charge all those found in violation of the Civil Emergencies Act for absolutely each and every time they violate same. Don't worry about those uneducated Looney Tunes.

I am confused..how could there be 9931 doses of Moderna vaccine administered when we only had 7200 doses to start?

Apparently, the reason the daily infection rate is going up is because we aren't isolating correctly. AND those thin pieces of paper people are religiously sticking on their faces.. don't work. You need.. uh huh.. 3 mask, or 2 masks if your mask is 2 or 3 ply. THEN you will be safe. er. https://nationalpost.com/health/should-we-all-be-wearing-two-masks-what-experts-say-about-the-latest-covid-19-debate

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2020/09/30/mask-guidelines-covid-faq/?arc404=true

"It is crucial that strong measures are kept in place in order to maintain a steady downward trend," Tam said in a news release. "With still elevated daily case counts and high rates of infection across all age groups, the risk remains that trends could reverse quickly and some areas of the country are seeing increased activity."

People THINK they are following the rules, but, are they? No. You are having sex with your spouse without a mask. What kind of isolation is that?
"She recommends couples skip kissing and avoid “face-to-face contact or closeness” during sex, or “consider using a mask that covers the nose and mouth.”
“By taking these precautions and staying conscious of the risks we assume, Canadians can find ways to enjoy physical intimacy while safeguarding the progress we have all made containing COVID-19.” Oh..and Hey, (take a look at that adams apple) Dr.? Tam says no drinking or drugs, because those can make you sloppy and make bad decisions. Like. Kissing your partner.

I don't think covid started out to be a government control tool. But, when the powerprobes saw how quickly we folded, stayed home and locked our doors.. it became a whooo hoooo moment. That 2 week activation of the Emergency Act is now just about a year. When is the populace going to put a stop to this?

Dear sir,
This is an outrage, it is! First the Chinese leak this virus from their siv-like lab. Then they get BILLIONS from Canada, only for them to give us one in the kiester. I for one will not be taking the SPUTNIK V vaccine just because Justin can't get one of the good ones made in the free world. I had a Lada back in the 80s and I know a thing or two about cheap Russian knock offs. If ol' Dawson City Silver wants to keep his job he ought to think about that.

Don’t waste your breath DL. In fact you should hold it until everyone else around has finished swallowing shat they are being fed. Never have I observed in all my years such uncritical, unthinking, and lazy people as I have in the last 15-20 years. My expired container of sour cream has more active grey matter than the people who believe in the COVID-scare narrative used to corral them into a mass of passive and obedient sheeple... I am not sure how many shearings it will take before the masses get tired of sleeping cold and naked on the floor of their master’s house...

Good luck and keep out of sight.

“I don’t agree with the math,” Silver said
Please! When do they care about math!? I mean entire country shut down for 0.0005% dead... here's the math.. 20,000÷38,000,000 also some more math
1÷42,000 = 0.00002% dead from covid.

Is anyone else really shocked with the continuous misleads? Aka lies?

You can always count on suppliers to screw up. Impossible to keep promises with something like this. Also, no problem with having vaccination delays. It comes with the job. Just as long as there is enough on hand for the second shot. Others can wait a bit longer.

If our politicians were truly concerned about public health, they would listen to the thousands of health professionals who oppose lockdowns because they cause more harm than good.

Over 54,000 health professionals worldwide signed a declaration advocating the end of all covid restrictions, and the focused protection of vulnerable ones, while the rest of society continues to provide life-sustaining goods and services.

Look it up at : https://gbdeclaration.org

CV19 was discovered in mid 1960's and what was done to it to make stronger is the question? Just talked to a person from Asian block and vaccine they are getting is 50% effective where our is 95% effective.

For heavens sake, lift all restrictions now. Survival rate for those infected with covid is 99%. To classify this as a 'pandemic' is misrepresentation, and shows there is an agenda. There are also highly effective treatments for covid with anti-virals like Ivermectin, but the controlled mainstream media never mentions this.

These politicians blindly obey the World Health Organization (WHO)'s directives, when it has been proven that WHO is entangled in obvious conflicts of interest with big pharma's highly profitable vaccine sales. And also with the WEF's "Great Reset" goal (already advocated by Justin Trudeau without consultation with Canadians).

Covid restrictions have twofold impacts: 1- they put people under pressure to take an experimental vaccine in order to get out of the lockdown. 2- and then they withhold the vaccine because of 'supply issues', prolonguing the lockdowns and ensuring that businesses are bankrupted and acquired at bargain prices by the 1% billionnaires, which is what the "Great Reset" is really about.

Covid restrictions cause more harm than good: much higher rates of depression, suicides, ddelayed treatments of other conditions resulting in deaths, overdoses, domestic abuse, increased poverty, etc.

If our politicians and Chief Medical Officer were truly concerned about public health, they would lift all restrictions now and promote the enhancement of the immune system (i.e. hand out free Vitamin D and C), and make anti-viral drugs like Ivermectin available for the prevention and treatment of covid,

Both governments are doing well, we just have to be patient.
If another company gov has contracted had a vaccine approved Canada would be in a different position.

Which equates to: Fail to plan - plan to fail.
But in all candor, these problems are not Mr. Silver's to wear. The Trudeau liberals are now twisting in the wind hoping evidence of their poor planning does not become public. Ask three federal ministers about the future of vaccine delivery and you'll get three different answers and a whole bunch of umms, ahhs and errs from junior.

Since this is a world wide problem there is very little any of us in little old Yukon can do about it. Covid seems to be disrupting everything in the world including supply chains. Only one problem, how to blame this all on the Liberals?

Our present PM is only discussing now having our own Moderna company after a year knowing we will require enough vaccines to match the population. It would be great if Sandy were conservative. The chief physician I have to say is doing a good job.
