Power outage cause probed
With the electricity out, a number of Yukoners may have had to find alternative dinner plans early Thursday evening.
With the electricity out, a number of Yukoners may have had to find alternative dinner plans early Thursday evening.
Power was lost at 5:34 p.m. in Riverdale, downtown and areas just south of Whitehorse.
Some downtown businesses were forced to close their doors, while others could offer cash sales-only.
Affected areas included Carcross, Tagish and Marsh Lake, as well as in Elsa, Keno City and the Hunker Creek area of Dawson.
Yukon Energy spokeswoman Janet Patterson said this morning power was restored within the hour.
While officials are still working to determine a cause, Patterson said it's believed there was an issue at the Aishihik site.
Staff were working today to find the cause and fix it.
While the power was out in parts of Riverdale again this morning, that was part of a Yukon Electrical Co. Ltd. planned power outage from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. for work to upgrade the system.

Hi Rick. You must work for Yukon Electric. Your comment tries to defend a company who's #1 goal is profits, #2 providing power. Yukoners are waking up to your bait and switch type of comment of "well, down south", that everyone uses to defend the BS happening up here. I hope you lose a $3000 computer due to these outages, then I'll see how much praise you limp on YE.

Rick, you must work for YG eh?
Power rates dictate that Yukoners can jump up and down when the hack company provides such shoddy service.....this is 2013, the company does not provide adequate service and if they don't like the feedback they should step up or sell out.

I think it is an aging system and now it needs to be updated and if you don't do vegetation maintenance on the lines you do get a lot more outages. As for going private, ask Albertans and Ontarioans if privatising has reduced their costs. Both governments have had to send cheques out to cover the increased price people pay and it did not provide a better service. So if you want to privatise and pay more with the same service go for it just don't cry when you do. As I suggested better and more frequent maintenance is what is needed.

People in the north seem to be very lacking in their understanding of power generation and distribution. Have grown up in Ontario we had several outages due to unforseen reasons. Here in the north our power is 99.9% reliable but as soon as it goes down we jump up and down. Power is still a luxury item, if it is a necessity for you look at investing in back up generation. Mother nature is a lot harsher here in the north and we need to understand that as electrical generation and distribution is dependent on mother nature.

Can't Power Our Needs on Aug 25, 2013 at 9:08 am

I completely agree with your comment. We had another power outage in Porter Creek today (Aug 25/13) and constantly have power "bumps". Yet we pay a hefty price for these services. It's sadistic and I wish someone would bring in competition with respect to utilities.
Apparently our needs power what Yukon Electric does. Ha what a joke!

Yes,sometimes it takes yet another power outage to remind us our utility company is on par with the 3rd world in terms of reliability yet happily gouges us with 1st world rates.

Yes, sometimes it takes a power outage to realize how fortunate we are to have electricity 99.99% of the time.
