A small bird is to blame for a widespread power outage that spanned south from Robert Service Way to Teslin on Wednesday afternoon.

In an interview this morning, Bill Cullen, ATCO Electric Yukon’s superintendent of operations, explained the bird involved was smaller than a raven.

It became tangled in a breaker at the Carcross Corner, resulting in damaged equipment and the system being shorted out.

Approximately 3,000 customers were affected.

Power was restored to most areas by 3:30 p.m., with those along the South Klondike Highway to Carcross and Tagish having their power restored at around 4:30 p.m.
