Power fails after pole struck

Approximately 200 residents of the McIntyre subdivision

By Whitehorse Star on September 21, 2015

Approximately 200 residents of the McIntyre subdivision were without power Friday afternoon after a vehicle took out a street light and a power pole about 60 metres away.

A 35-year-old Whitehorse woman is facing a multitude of charges under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Motor Vehicles Act. The RCMP were not yet releasing her name this morning.

The outage began at 1:15 p.m. for about 24 homes on McCrimmon Crescent and O’Brien Road, spokeswoman Stephanie Cunha of ATCO Electric Yukon said this morning.

She said the ATCO crew was forced to turn off power to the entire subdivision at 2:30 to make repairs.

The juice was restored at 4:42 to the community at large with the exception of the residents on McCrimmon Crescent and O’Brien Road. Their electricity was back on at 5:27.

Cunha said a vehicle knocked down a street light, then a power pole about 60 metres away.

Whitehorse RCMP Const. Julia Fox said the driver of the red Dodge pickup fled the scene on foot and was arrested later.

Cunha said ATCO was alerted by a phone call from a resident about power lines laying on the road.
