Children and youth in Whitehorse may receive a “positive ticket” from an RCMP officer this summer.
Children and youth in Whitehorse may receive a “positive ticket” from an RCMP officer this summer.
A positive ticket is a way of recognizing a member of the community doing something good. It also encourages a positive relationship with police from a young age, and reinforces good habits.
Const. Karina Moore, a new RCMP officer, is known as a “newly engaged member” within the force. These new officers are encouraged to find a way to make a positive difference in the community they are becoming a part of.
“I wanted to do a project that helped create a positive influence with the children and youth in the community,” Moore said Tuesday.
“This led me to think of a way to improve community relations in a personal manner, and we implemented a positive ticketing initiative in cooperation with McDonald’s.”
The project, which started earlier this month and is called the Safe Summer Initiative 2020, will continue until the end of August.
Officers patrolling the streets who see a child or youth positively benefitting the community, or doing something safe, like wearing a bike helmet or using a crosswalk, can issue a positive ticket.
The tickets are redeemable at either of the two local McDonald’s restaurant locations for a small ice cream cone.
More than 50 tickets have been issued in the community so far, with more to come as the summer continues.

@woodcutter
And like participation medals, it's not the kids asking for them.

And yet you can't get the RCMP to respond to an out of town B&E and theft of thousands of dollars worth of an elderly couples possessions. I'm glad this new touchy feely RCMP have their priorities straight.

Is this not like getting a participation medal? It doesn't mean anything, other then PR. What a waste of taxpayer $$$.

Also, love how it's redeemable at McDonalds, the most UNHEALTHY "restaurant" in the world! Oh the irony..

I wonder how many people are going to find something negative in this positive situation to complain about! Thank you Const. Karina Moore, what a terrific idea. We all know there’s enough negativity going around. Something like this can change a kids day, week or perhaps their future.
