A late-night call to Whitehorse RCMP may well have prevented a half-dozen thefts from vehicles early this morning.
Armed with information from a 4 a.m. phone call to the police detachment, officers arrived at the Sternwheeler Village townhouse complex on Lewes Boulevard. They found several young people in the parking lot, along with footprints and signs that snow on seven vehicles had been disturbed.
An 18-year-old male was arrested for attempted theft. He's to be released on a summons to show up for court, while two young women, aged 16 and 20, were held in police cells until they sobered up.
Meanwhile, police aren't quite sure if an attempt was made to break into an Alsek Road home last night or if someone just showed up at the wrong house.
At about 20 minutes to midnight, a resident heard noise outside and called police, Whitehorse RCMP Sgt. John Sutherland said this morning. Officers found footprints in the snow, which they followed to another Riverdale residence on Tay Street.
No one answered the door when officers knocked, said Sutherland.
The investigation continues.
Several young women are uninjured after the vehicle they were travelling in rolled onto its roof on the South Klondike Highway on Monday.
Police were called from the Carcross Corner at 8:40 p.m. and told a vehicle was upside down. The several young women who'd been in the car were out and uninjured when police arrived, said Sutherland.
The vehicle's roof had been crushed when it rolled.
Road conditions were very poor, said Sutherland.
The driver said she'd been rounding a corner when another vehicle overtook her and moved to pass. When the passing vehicle began to lose control, she lost control of her own vehicle as well.
The driver told officers she was unable to provide a description of the vehicle that had passed her and kept driving.
