Police start annual action against impaired driving

As Yukoners prepare for their holiday celebrations this year, RCMP across the territory are

gearing up to try to put a stop to impaired driving.

As of last Friday, officers are putting up check stops to try to encourage people to find a safe ride home.

"With all the parties and other social events going on at this time of year, it's a time where we take a special interest in making sure people get home safe,” Cpl. Shawn Pollard, head of the Yukon's traffic division, said in an interview.

Pollard was tight-lipped as to when or where the holiday checkpoints will be happening, only saying they are placed at random.

Every detachment in the territory as well as auxiliary members get involved, Pollard said.

Once again, the Whitehorse chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will be involved in helping the police.

This year, the chapter has created gift bags worth about $150 for drivers doing their part to keep the roads safe.

"The reward bags are for when officers see someone who is acting as a designated driver, that one person at a party who decides not to drink so they can get their friends home,” said chapter president Daniela Martinson.

The bags contain gift cards and other small products donated by local businesses, Martinson said.

Representatives from MADD will also be at the check stops.

"We want people to see us and realize this is a senseless crime that is 100 per cent preventable,” Martinson said.

"There's more to it than just breaking the law; you can take a person's life.”

I am sure that the RCMP and the volunteers with MADD are seeking to keep impaired drivers from all substances off our streets. It should be called Mothers Against Impaired Driving - but then it would be MAID - and that would be silly.

Congratulate your volunteers - thank them for their efforts and take a cab if you have been drinking.

great job rcmp. The only criticism is have it more than just the holidays and do it later at night. The only people that oppose this fantastic work are the people who drink and drive and morons. I don't want my kids being hit by a drunk driver, maybe you should give a damn too.

Wayne Your comments do not make sense. Why do you have a problem with volunteers trying to help keep our streets safer. If you have lived in Whitehorse for many years, you would know we have a major issue with drinking and driving. Also from what I have heard the only people with issue about these check stops are the people who drink and drive. So good for all those Volunteers that will stand out in the cold just to help keep our children and citizens safer.

Wayne, you really need to wake up pal...for one, I am really glad to see the cops out there and do not mind for a second them holding me up to check for drunk drivers, which by what the papers say there is a whole lot of in the Yukon.

Good work RCMP.

johnjack: At least you agree that it is harassment. I'm pretty sure you don't mean harm to my children.

What about the people that drive under the influence of drugs? Will MADD be looking out for that also?

It also takes only one sober driver to kill someone too...and that could of been prevented at the DMV.

Hey Wayne the vast majority may be sober but it only takes one drunk driver to kill someone. If people didn't drink and drive there wouldn't be any harassment. As far as MADD being there wait until one of your kids are killed you would be out there too or should be!!!

Here we go again, giving the Queen's cowboys freedom to hassle motorists. The vast majority of drivers stopped will be

sober. We'll get a lecture from MADD, too. Actually, why is MADD involved in checkstops at all?
