Police arrest man in connection with Dust Ball assaults

'Good ol' fashion police work' led to the arrest Wednesday of one of four men Whitehorse RCMP were searching for in connection with fights at last month's Dust Ball International Slo-Pitch Tournament dance, says Sgt. Ross Milward.
Police arrested Kevin Gordon Smith without incident at around 5 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the city, Milward said Thursday.
It was the lengthy investigation into his whereabouts which led to the arrest rather than a tip to police, said Milward.
Early this month, police issued warrants for Smith, 21; Jesse Allan Ritchie, 27; Calvin Jefferson Hayes, 27; and Michael Davis Brereton, 22.
Smith appeared in court Thursday afternoon to face charges of assault, aggravated assault, and two counts of assault causing bodily harm. He was to reappear today.
Also arrested earlier this month in connection with the fights was Clinton Robert Derkson, 21, who's facing a charge of assault causing bodily harm.
His next court appearance is set for Sept. 6.
Milward said police are continuing their investigation into the whereabouts of Ritchie, Hayes and Brereton.
'We're not certain if they're in the territory,' he said.
Police said Ritchie and Hayes, as well as Smith and Derkson, are from Surrey, B.C., though court records show all of them except Ritchie have Whitehorse addresses. Brereton is from Whitehorse.
While Whitehorse RCMP haven't contacted other detachments or police services in provinces about the men, Milward noted the warrants are on a national computer system and will come up if any of them are stopped or arrested by police in other jurisdictions.
They are also listed on Crime Stoppers, which is a national service as well.
It is up to Crown prosecutors to decide how to proceed after any arrests, Milward noted.
Both Hayes and Ritchie are charged with aggravated assault and two counts of assault causing bodily harm, while Brereton is charged with assault causing bodily harm.
Police have described Ritchie as caucasion with hazel eyes, short black hair and a goatee. He also has a stocky build, weighing about 264 lbs. at five feet, eight inches tall.
Hayes is described as a black male with a heavy build, though police didn't have information on his height and weight. He has brown eyes, black hair and goes by the nickname of Tyson.
Brereton, also known as Nick, is caucasion with a medium build, is five feet, six inches tall and weighs 169 lbs. He has blue eyes and short, cropped blond hair.
The public are advised to contact police if they come into contact with any of the men, rather than approaching them.
