RCMP are seeking the public's assistance in tracking down whoever stole a truck from a residence in Carmacks last Saturday.

A silver 2007 extended cab GMC Sierra was stolen from the residence at around 11 p.m. and driven south on the North Klondike Highway according to police. The vehicle travelled toward the scene of a collision from earlier in the day near Braeburn Lodge, where RCMP officers were still stationed.

Originally, the truck appeared as though it was slowing down and officers approached the vehicle. The driver accelerated, nearly striking an officer, who was not injured.

Sgt. Don Rogers said today an officer attempted to follow the truck but its speed was too great.

The vehicle was found abandoned in the Lake Laberge campground last Sunday. RCMP seized it for a forensic examination. Rogers said he was unsure what, if anything, the examination turned up.

Rogers said that the RCMP have identified persons of interest, but whether anyone will be charged remains to be determined.

Police are asking the public to contact their local detachment or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they have any information.

"We're looking for anybody who may have seen somebody dump the vehicle in the campground or a suspicious person or persons hitchhiking in that area on the 15th,” said Rogers.
