Petition demands action against packing canines

Angie Dickson and Crystal Wiebe are hoping to collect 300 signatures on a petition calling for action against the dog packs in Carcross.
They then plan to take the petition to the RCMP, the territorial government and the Carcross-Tagish First Nation.
'People are walking around with sticks,' Dickson said of the problem in an interview this morning.
She knows of three dogs that have been found dead. It's believed they were killed by the packs of dogs that are roaming the community of approximately 350 to 400 people.
In one case, a dog was found dead in a back yard.
While Dickson is unsure of the number of packs roaming around the community, she believes there is more than one.
'These aren't wild dogs,' she said.
Rather, they are domesticated dogs packing together.
It's only a matter of time before a child gets hurt by a pack, she warned.
In fact, many parents are keeping their children inside to protect them from the group or groups of dogs.
Already, the petition calling for action has 205 signatures. Dickson noted she and Wiebe are seeking 300 signatures to demonstrate the entire community is behind the move.
Carcross has had numerous problems over the years with packing dogs. Although a dog catcher was brought in at times, Dickson said, the measure was never effective.
'Nothing's really been done,' she said.
Because the community isn't governed by a municipal government, there is no way of passing a bylaw that dogs must be kept on a leash or a chain.
Dickson and Wiebe hope that with the petition, a solution can be found to deal with the problem.
