Pet food recall has alarmed Yukoners

City veterinarians are asking pet owners to monitor their animals following the recall of food from one of the largest producers in North America.
Dr. Marina Alpeza of the Copper Road Veterinary Clinic said Tuesday while she hasn't seen any indications that contaminated Proctor and Gamble (P&G) pet food recalled last week in Canada and the U.S. has made it to Whitehorse, animal owners using P&G should check their pets.
'The symptoms are loss of appetite, vomiting and lethargy. We did not have any of the affected food at our clinic,' she said.
According to P&G, the recalled items are 'wet' pet food under the brand names of Eukanuba and Iams and are believed to lead to kidney problems in pets.
Lisa Triggs, the owner of The Feed Store/Pet Junction in Whitehorse, said at noon today her business has been swamped with 100 calls a day from concerned animal owners about the recall.
'It's been really steady, but we understand people are concerned about their pets.'
Triggs said she did have some canned and pouched dog and cat food recalled by her supplier, Nutros Pet Food, but that the food is not on the contamination list.
'The supplier recalled it because it was made by the same company, Menu Foods Inc.,' Triggs said.
'It didn't contain any wheat germ, the thing suspected of being the cause of the contamination, but they just wanted to be on the safe side.'
Triggs said if anyone has any concerns over the food purchased from her store, they can call her business or return the item.
The precise nature of the problem, meanwhile, has not yet been isolated.
The recalled items, a P&G press release states, include:
5.5 ounce Eukanuba canned dog food;
three ounce Eukanuba cat pouches;
5.3 ounce Eukanuba dog pouches;
13.2 and six ounce Iams canned dog food;
three ounce Iams cat pouches; and
5.3 ounce Iams dog pouches.
The recalled items, according to P&G, are specifically from an Emporia, Kansas manufacturing plant, Menu Foods, Inc. and carry code dates between 6339 and 7073.
Kim Friedenberg, a vet at the Alpine Veterinary Medical Centre, said this morning that while his office has been receiving a number of calls from concerned pet owners, blood tests he's performed on animals would not lead him to believe contaminated pet food has made its way to Whitehorse.
'There's lots of concerned pet owners whose pets have been on that type of food,' he said.
'I haven't seen any pets who've displayed those type of symptoms as of yet.'
He said his office doesn't carry the pet food in question either.
Friedenberg said if pet owners are concerned that they may have purchased contaminated food, they should switch to another type of food.
The new food, he said, should be of the same brand name to avoid upsetting the stomach of the animal consuming the food.
He said any pet owners who have concerns for their pets' health should contact their veterinarian.
