One person is dead after a blaze that destroyed a home in Pelly Crossing on Christmas evening.

Territorial fire marshal Marty Dobbin said today that while the victim of the blaze hasn't been identified yet, it's believed the occupant of the home was an adult male.

Dobbin's office was contacted by Pelly Crossing RCMP at close to midnight Monday to inform him of the house fire, which had likely started a couple of hours before that.

After the blaze was extinguished, firefighters removed the victim's body from the scene. An autopsy has been ordered, though when it will be performed is still unknown.

With the house and any evidence having been destroyed, the cause of the fire will likely remain unknown.

'My office was unable to do an investigation,' Dobbin told the Star.

While it's unknown if there was a smoke alarm in the dwelling, the fire marshal noted the blaze emphasizes the need for homes to have smoke alarms which properly function.
