VANDALS STRIKE AGAIN – Glass litters the parking lot of the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport from the window of the car at left being smashed out (above). Below: a truck with its rear window shattered was another casualty of the latest vandalism spree in the lot, which has not been patrolled in the past and which does not have surveillance cameras.

Patrols of airport parking lot to start tonight

Whitehorse RCMP are investigating and expecting further reports of damage to vehicles parked at the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport.

Const. Julia Fox said this morning several reports of damage to vehicles parked at the airport were received over the weekend, with many vehicle owners reporting smashed windows.

“Whitehorse RCMP members are investigating and anticipate reports of mischief and theft to vehicles will increase as people return home from their trips,” Fox said.

Loose change, FM transmitters and tobacco are a few examples of items that have been stolen.

“Whitehorse RCMP encourage people to leave any items of value at home, and not in their vehicles,” police said.

“Another consideration could be to leave your vehicle at home or at a friend’s house, and get a ride to the airport.”

Highways and Public Works Minister Scott Kent also encouraged residents to take precautions during an interview early this afternoon, while noting the territory is making efforts to deal with the situation as well.

After a number of similar break-ins occurred at the airport in August, Kent directed staff to look at the cost and timelines of installing surveillance cameras in the parking lot, recognizing the government has a role to play in keeping the area safe.

While the plans for surveillance cameras remain part of the long term plan, given the most recent break-ins, Kent stressed the need to prioritize that work and do something immediately.

As work continues on the cameras, government security will be conducting four patrols each night of the parking lot.

“We wanted to move quickly,” he told the Star, noting the exact costs associated with the security patrols aren’t yet known.

The patrols will begin tonight and happen every night for the foreseeable future.

Maybe they could use the $75 I paid towards a ticket; for taking too long to say goodbye to my loved ones. Or utilize those ticket officers, they seem mighty amped to catch a criminal!

There appears to be a lot of resources directed at chasing after drug dealers. However this does not reduce the number of addicts, but rather it drives up the price of illegal drugs and as a result there is more theft of items which can be sold for drug money.

Why don't the authorities take a balanced approach to all criminal activity instead of mostly focusing on the 'war-on-drugs'? Their efforts don't appear to be making the situation better as we've seen a dramatic increase in petty crime to support illegal drug addiction in the past few years.

OH MY GOD! Scott Kent is a Rocket Scientist. He states staff are going to do four patrols a night. haha Does he think the thief can't read? Why don't we now specifically say at what times those will be Scott? So now you just go over and watch and when they are done you have two hours to get your work done. ARE YOU KIDDING GUYS????

Take a cab to the airport? Happy to do so. Can you tell if the cab company will pick me up at my home in Haines Junction in time to catch my 5:50 am flight tomorrow?

I appreciate this is a naïve statement ... but, why is the onus on preventing crime being placed on the law abiding citizen? Why is patrolling, enforcement and conviction not the focus?
The average citizen is essentially being blamed for leaving their own belongs in their own vehicle. The crime is now their fault.
Something is wrong here folks.

the local plods around here are too busy ticketing drivers for doing 27 mph as they leave a school zone ( yes, that was me last September ) than actually patrolling crime sites and preventing criminality. They have to look as if they are actually doing something between trips to Subway for a pulled-pork and Starbucks for a coppercino. Laughable really.

"Graham has strong family support in the community and runs a taxi business with multiple employees" - Quote taken from coverage of a local drug dealer conviction. This is why I won't take a taxi to the airport!!

@Yukon Cornelius -- "We're not dealing with Moriarty here". True that. Also, thanks for the laugh.

Maybe it seems like small potatoes for the RCMP, but this kind of petty theft and vandalism can create hardship for people. Look at that theft of $6,000 worth of tools down at the glass-blowing construction site. Not everyone is equipped to deal with an emergency quickly.

I really don't understand why security can't be expanded to the parking lot. Because it isn't a mastermind criminal or supervillain and with relatively minimal effort they could discourage this. They probably want to, but some cockamamie limits are put on it.

Telling people not to drive there or use the parking lot isn't problem-solving, it's capitulation.

Leave your vehicle at home, take a cab or get someone to drive you to airport. Pretty simple solution, also, don't leave valuables in your vehicle, that's just saying "come get it". Be a little responsible, your not the only City to have break ins in a parking lot and will not be the last!! Better yet, start a company to car pool people to airport!

To Thomas Brewer: be careful what you say Thomas. My home got robbed of 2 TVs, ipad, portable dvd player, kindle, only 2 pieces of jewelry..all I had a gold nugget cross and a big silver kokopelli on a very expensive silver chain... while the cop did not have the whole list of missing items, of what was gone he said "do you think he just borrowed it?" I knew who robbed me.. I love dropcams, and I posted his name and what was missing on facebook buy and sell to warn others. The cop called me and said if any harm came to the man because I posted his name, I would be charged and could go to jail.

When you say "The citizenry of Whitehorse has become sick and tired of this and if the RCMP won't take initiative then The People will,". If anyone gets punched in the nose for committing a crime, the RCMP could come after you for inciting vigilante justice. You are a whole lot easier to catch and put in jail than a criminal.

My experiences with the RCMP are dismal to say the least. Break ins at the Airport have been going on for what? 2 months? Ok.. it took the RCMP 2 months to decide to investigate.. and the best they have to offer is, leave your vehicle somewhere else and don't leave items of value in your car. Big whoop.. Criminals will break in anyway, to see if anything was left in the glove or under a seat. No matter what their age.. THEY are criminals.

Seriously, we're just supposed to park at home and take a cab to the airport? I don't think we're dealing with Moriarty here and a modicum of effort by the RCMP would likely bring these miscreants to justice. If that's not too much to ask.

There is an election coming up soon Mr. Kent. You had better pay attention, this is not a minor matter. People are tired of being told this is somehow or other their fault. Don't call this Mischief. Call it what it is, Break and Enter and Theft. Thief's laugh at this system that we refer to as a Justice System. If there was any justice they would be caught and held accountable. Quit putting the blame on the victims.

When a police entity tells you " you shouldn't have valuables in the car." Or "have someone drive you to the airport." I'm reminded of police thirty years ago recommending women not dress provocatively lest they be raped. Who's committing the crime?... Stop telling us it's our fault because we "tempted" them.

"Which has not been patrolled in the past"? What a crock. I used to work for the Commissionaires several years ago, and we patrolled the airport every night. They later lost the contract to a civilian security company to save money.

This isn't just a Whitehorse problem. It happens at a lot of long term parking facilities, hence the signage and disclaimer on tickets saying the lot providers are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged property. The RCMP are not responsible for this security issue. Let's be serious here people, in the comment section on the Whitehorse Star, we want the police to stop break and enters into businesses and residences; stop impaired driving; stop violent assaults; have murders solved faster than what CSI can air it; ticket every car driving in the down town area; find a safe place for all the intoxicated people that are not committing a criminal offence; and now we want them to also patrol the parking lot of the Airport. Why not ask them to walk your dog for you as well, and after you can still complain over how they do their job.
Here's a thought, join the Citizens on Patrol or your community neighbourhood association and get out there yourself. Observe and Report, instead of bitch and moan.

There would be a less expensive solution; place Ryan Leef signs around the parking lot. He will take care of it and he is good at it.

"VANDALS STRIKE AGAIN" This is not mere vandalism, this is break and enter, this is theft, this has potential identity theft implications, and if your car is at the airport you likely aren't at home... and your address is on the registration. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how this could escalate to burglary.

Time for the RCMP to implement bait cars, bikes, boats, ATV's, and sleds.
The citizenry of Whitehorse has become sick and tired of this and if the RCMP won't take initiative then The People will, just you wait and see.

Really? They pay you money and that is your suggestion. Somebody mentioned a lawsuit. I hope they do sue you.

Hey, you know what would have been really smart? Not telling the bad guys you are patrolling, then actually arrest, charge and convict them. Then make them pay restitution for every single window they broke and everything they have stolen. Then get them to sweep up all that glass.
