A SIGN OF THE TIMES – Yukon Party president Jonas Smith, front, and volunteer Darren Parsons put up a sign by the Yukon Party's campaign office this morning. Premier Darrell Pasloski may be preparing to announce next week that Yukoners will go to the polls in October.

Pasloski is set to speak at pivotal chamber luncheon

Déjà vu? Could it be? The same thing all over? A little superstition, perhaps?

Déjà vu?

Could it be? The same thing all over? A little superstition, perhaps?

Maybe.

Exactly five years ago next week, former premier Dennis Fentie hosted a luncheon for members of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce.

Shortly after the strawberry shortcake was served, the member of the legislative assembly from Watson Lake announced his Yukon Party would be seeking a second majority on the Tuesday following the October Thanksgiving weekend. And a majority it was.

On Tuesday, the chamber sent out an invitation for the Friday, Sept. 9 luncheon to be hosted by Premier Darrell Pasloski.

It invites members to hear the latest on a new resource revenue-sharing deal with Ottawa.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the agreement in Haines Junction last Friday – with Pasloski at his side.

Chamber members are asked to come out to hear about the new health care funding arrangement with Ottawa which Harper announced last Thursday in Yellowknife – with Pasloski at his side.

And the invitation goes on to say the premier will have "much, much more” to talk about while members enjoy their meal.

According to the law of the land, election campaigns must begin on a Friday, in order that polling day fall on a Monday, 31 days hence. Or on the Tuesday, following the Monday, if the Monday is a holiday, as was the case when Fentie dropped the election writ in 2006.

If – as some have speculated today – Pasloski tops off next Friday's chocolate mousse with a call to the polls, election day would be Oct. 11, the Tuesday following Thanksgiving Monday.

Under territorial law, the election must be called by October.

This "premier" title issue reminds me of Gerald Ford, the only unelected president in US history (Nixon and Agnew were the names on the original slate).

American voters showed Ford the door the first chance they got. It will be interesting to see how Yukoners will respond.

Exactly Michael. I find this whole thing fake. No one voted for him except the party. How can Fentie just leave? Darryl just walks in like king of the Yukon. Signing this, signing that, flipping burgers. Until you are voted there by the people you are not premier of anything. You were just given the title. Leader of the Yukon Party or not.

Out of curiosity who elected Pasloski the Premier?

Oh yeah, nobody.

I wish the media would stop calling him the Premier.
