THE LATEST WOE – The stripping of the new siding off the Dawson City hospital is seen this morning. Right: a close-up of the problem.
The saga of the Yukon's new hospitals continues.
The saga of the Yukon's new hospitals continues.
The siding on the new Dawson City hospital will have to be replaced because the specially designed product has begun falling off.
The cement product had been chosen because it met the requirements of Dawson's heritage advisory committee and is non-combustible, Val Pike, a spokesperson for the Yukon Hospital Corp., said today.
"Once we started putting the siding on the building, it was discovered that the product wasn't suitable for the fluctuations in climate in Dawson and the product started to fall off once it was installed,” Pike told the Star.
The product is now being removed. The corporation, in collaboration with the heritage advisory committee, is looking at replacement options.
Pike said the corporation hopes to have the new product installed in the next month, and it shouldn't impact the opening of the hospital in the fall.
The corporation doesn't know at this point how much the debacle will cost; officials are looking into what may be covered under the product warranty, Pike said.
The new hospitals in Dawson and Watson Lake have been the subject of continued controversy since a scathing report by the Auditor General highlighted shoddy planning that resulted in cost overruns and delays.
The Dawson hospital was originally set to cost $26.5 million, an estimate that has since risen to $31.8 million now, including equipment and interest costs.
The hospital was originally scheduled to open in the fall of 2012. It is now expected to open in the fall of 2013.
Sandy Silver, the Liberal MLA for the Klondike, said today he'd been hearing rumours about issues with the siding for some time.
"From the beginning, the two hospital projects were politically motivated,” he said.
"When you have something politically motivated to start, you're not going to have proper planning through a needs assessment.
"We know this as well through that Auditor General of Canada's report,” Silver said.
"Now, unfortunately, what we're seeing is proof of this.
"It just doesn't make any sense that a properly planned project would have a siding type that A) doesn't fit the climate or maybe B) fit the heritage bylaws,” he said.
These issues will continue to come up, he predicted, and it's because politicians were permitted to make decisions on a political whim.
"Hopefully, moving forward, we can now focus in on a community needs assessment and actually get a hospital that fits our community, which would be great.
"But also, I hope we learn our lesson here for those larger projects.”

WHAT!! Dawson does not deserve a state of the art health centre? Watson lake sure appreciates theirs. I am not being political, however if Dawson does not want it then I guess a nursing station is what you should have. EXCUSE ME for wanting the same service as most Canadians, and for paying for it. I guess a bottle of whiskey and a rag to chew on when you get administered medical care fits your 1898 theme. CARRY ON Dawson everything here is more expensive and always costs more that it should.

ralph and mlehner please stop being so obviously partisan on this.
From the Auditor's report this project was poorly planned with no needs assessment at all. It was a poorly planned political decision and the result is a poorly planned building from the get go. Did Dawson need an upgrade from what they had? Yes. Did they need that? Not all all. Who ever heard of siding falling off a new building in Dawson? Who makes these decisions?? The last people in the world, politicans!! When is comes to large projects, there should be no political involvement after the initial decision, yes we need something, after that the professionals should take it from there. Never happens in the Yukon and you end up with, well what you end up with.

Take a politically driven bad design from outside engineers, assembled by outside contractors, with insufficient oversight by hospital corp...
what could possibly go wrong?

As someone from Dawson I can attest to the fact we didn't ask, want or need this facility. Acute care should happen in Whitehorse or Outside. This building will be impossible to staff.

rALPH and mlehner....The auditors reports said the same thing as Silver...read article before typing...I'd guess you love the Pasloski camp and their dog and pony show for for all their efforts to bring wealth to the Yukon....another poorly researched opinion on your parts.

Not sure how this is Sandy's fault. He is correct in being upset with this debacle. The "brand new hospital" as you put it has already run over budget, is way behind schedule and now is falling apart before it is even open. Sandy is doing exactly what his constituents voted him in for. A new hospital isn't going to do anybody any good if it keeps falling apart and requiring more work. And "worthy of Dawson" give me a break, I've been to Dawson . A small clinic would have been worthy of Dawson, not a full blown hospital that doesn't even look like the other structures in town.

Leave it to Sandy Silver to complain about a brand new hospital being built in his community.

My god Sandy, you sure can play up an issue. Sun news network would love to have you. Give it a rest. We are getting a beautiful facility, worthy of Dawson.
