Chance, the orphaned muskox calf from Nunavut that flew into Whitehorse last Friday night, is making himself at home at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve.

'He's adjusting very well,' Carolyn Thorne, the executive director of the preserve off the Takhini Hot Springs Road, said in an interview this morning.

The 6.75-kilogram (15-lb.) calf took to the bottle feeding of replacement milk almost immediately after arriving at 10 p.m. Friday.

'He was pretty hungry,' Thorne said, pointing to the long flight he had last Friday.

Last Thursday, Chance flew to Yellowknife. There, he was examined by a veterinarian before flying to Whitehorse Friday aboard First Air.

Along with eating, the calf seems comfortable as he's also started playing by butting its head, Thorne said.

Chance was rescued in Nunavut when pilots for Laserich's Adlair Aviation in Cambridge found what they believed was a dog lying on the side of the road.

When Laserich's Air owner Joann Laserich came out to the area, while pilots unsuccessfully searched for the herd, Chance followed her back to her truck and was in her care before being flown to Whitehorse.

The pilots continued looking for Chance's herd in Nunavut but were unsuccessful.

As she cared for the calf, Laserich searched for facilities where Chance could be taken care of, eventually finding the Yukon Wildlife Preserve.

There, he's been placed in a quarantine pasture where he'll remain for 10 to 14 days.

Every three hours, he's fed approximately one litre of the milk replacement.

Provided everything is all right while in the quarantine area, he'll be placed in with the four other muskox calves at the preserve until he's weaned off of the milk replacement at approximately five to six months old. Thorne said that will likely happen in September.

Chance will then join the adult herd of muskox, which now sits at 14.
