Opposition parties being hypocritical: Liberals

The Liberal caucus has another take on the opposition parties’ position that the government is operating too unilaterally with regard to its education system plans.

By Whitehorse Star on August 4, 2020

Revised - The Liberal caucus has another take on the opposition parties’ position that the government is operating too unilaterally with regard to its education system plans.

The Yukon Party, meanwhile, says the Liberals are wrong to say it’s not responding to ministerial letters.

Last Thursday, Yukon Party MLA Scott Kent sent the government a letter asking that the legislature be recalled by this Thursday and that an all-party committee of MLAs be created to examine the government’s back-to-school plans.

Schools are set to reopen beginning Aug. 20.

“The hypocrisy of Yukon’s opposition parties continues,” the Liberal caucus said in a statement Monday afternoon.

“It has been eight weeks since Liberal government house leader Tracy-Anne McPhee wrote to Yukon’s opposition parties once again offering to answer any questions they have about the ministerial orders that have been passed under Yukon’s Civil Emergency Measures Act in response to COVID-19.

“There has been no response.”

But the Yukon Party maintains that is not true, pointing to a June 1 letter from Stacey Hassard, the party’s former acting leader, to McPhee and Premier Sandy Silver.

Two weeks ago, McPhee offered the opposition parties another opportunity to meet with ministers to scrutinize the Yukon’s 2020-21 budget and government spending to date, the Liberals said.

McPhee’s proposal would have seen the budget briefings take place in the Yukon Legislative Assembly so they could be broadcast to the public, recorded, transcribed and attended by media.

The Yukon NDP has once again refused the offer, as it did in April, the governing caucus said. The Yukon Party has not responded, the Liberals added.

“Despite their public cries for the need to scrutinize our government’s actions, the opposition parties continue to refuse opportunities to do just that,” McPhee said.

“Simply put, the opposition is quick to criticize, but refuse to do their work. Yukoners deserve steady leadership and accurate information.

“Our government remains focused on protecting the health and safety of Yukoners and supporting them through these challenging times.”

The opposition parties have been provided briefings on the 2020-21 back-to-school plan as well as various COVID-19 response programs, the Liberals said, including paid sick leave support, the Yukon Business Relief Program, and the COVID-19 Rent Assist program.

The two parties also receive the government’s Emergency Measures Organization COVID-19 daily update and weekly briefings from Dr. Brendan Hanley, the Yukon’s chief medical officer of health, the Liberals said.

But the Yukon Party says the Liberals are wrong to say it did not respond to McPhee’s proposal of two weeks ago – pointing to the letter on the select committee concept Kent sent to her last Thursday.

What questions and answers would be engaged in at this new governing town hall meeting (haha)? Believe me if the conservatives had anything of significance to ask it would already have happened. Conspiracy theorists just stirring up dust and alluding to great problems that simply are not there.
All anyone needs to know about the conservatives and the 'Yukon Party' is currently unfolding in Watson Lake.
What are the questions please?

a non partisan observation of "politicians"

A great many, but not all...truly DO fit my cynical narrative of "political windbags".
So elite those many but not all, looooooong since got "disconnected" from those who put them there. So so soooooo very unfortunate too!
The many, many but seriously not all, bicker, smear, and deflect just like petulant children. Completely aware of ZERO consequences those many, many are..hence?

The absolute CAUSTIC brand we ALL...repeat...ALL must deal with.
Some are elected, some...many are appointed, the vast majority...epic entitlements syndrome (certain there is a term..jnfg@p).

This planneddemic...has been a stunning absolute REVEAL as to who sits/hides where to me at least, how you process..is on you.
Please folks do not just accept my POV on topics as these, dig into the reality of just who the actual engineers are...to this FAILED socialist experiment.

Still a non partisan POV...as many, many but not all "team Blue" are players in this very very dangerous game.
Governments give you no rights, we have them as HUMANS..get it yet?
Governments today exists to regulate, strip, and "heel" you..of said rights...as a human.

I need no museum, nor tribunal to "confirm" I am a human.
Geezuz I hope many, yes all (dreamer) start to get it very very soon?

The Standing Orders for the Legislative Assembly do have flexibility to allow "Special Sittings" rather than waiting for the Spring or Fall sittings as has been the norm primarily driven by the fiscal year end of March 31st and the passing of new budgets - both the Main and Supplementary versions.
If all is well and there is nothing to hide, why is Mr. Silver avoiding the opportunity to stand on their record over the past 150-ish days for all Yukoners to see?

@Cube, Yes, I suspect public turnout to a Town Hall meeting would be a bit slim right now, however students are going back into the classrooms, commercial operators are resuming their businesses with some adjustments for the COVID protocols, why then are the elected officials avoiding their jobs in the Legislative Assembly where there is already a well-established distancing protocol among the members? It appears they are more concerned about not answering questions than any chance of spreading or contracting a viral infection. If all is well, why are they not thumping their chests about Yukon's comparative success on keeping the pandemic under control here compared to other Canadian jurisdictions? Unless they are concerned about answering for things other than the delivered COVID response?

I think all the liberal kool-aid drinkers would think differently if all the people “working” from home were collecting CERB rather than full salaries. The Silver government is declaring an emergency because it is apparently dire times. But not dire enough to have a full government functioning. As stated, a briefing by a minister is not the same as a sitting government. I guess you are all OK with the legislature quitting early in the spring. But with all the important decisions that will need to be made, some are fine with a Liberal dictatorship federally and territorially. Has anyone noticed that other jurisdictions are at least trying to govern democratically? But I guess using Pasloski and Harper as an excuse makes it all palatable.

I met a good conservative once. It was out on the trap-line where I came across him on the trail frozen, with his hand held out as though he were awaiting his 'friends of the government contract'. I shook his out stretched hand and bid him adieu. Best conservative I've ever met.

Of course the opposition parties turned down briefings and chances to question the government. If they had accepted, they would lose the pearls they've been clutching and would not be able to continue with the faux outrage about how "democracy is being denied" or "shut down" or some other nonsense. Everyone who knows anything about politics in Yukon, knows that the legislature always closes between spring and fall. This is just a narrative from the Yukon Party trying to hood wink the public into believing this is something nefarious and definitely not normal. They will do anything in order to regain power, including lying to the public it seems. Shameful.

Are there any surprises here? When has it been any different for the 'Yukon Party'?
There is history and those who have been around to verify these claims. We don't have room here to list the breaches of hypocrisy engaged by the right wingers. For them it's a way of life and there is no problem.

The Liberals and Tracy McFee are lying by twisting words and they know it. A budget briefing is simply that, a briefing. It does not give opposition a chance to actually scrutinize the budgets and get answers on line items. They are a high level overview. Nothing more.

Looks more like Liberal arrogance to me. I concur with Mathew -If Silver and his team had the courage they'd have a town hall meeting and take questions from the public. I suspect there would be a long list of topics taxpayers would like some clear answers on, as to date communications from the government has been less than informative. At least in the Legislature there are rules of conduct to follow, the public is not restricted by these same rules.

YEP - nailed it !
The remnants of the Pasloski Party have done nothing useful for all Yukoners since they lost the last election.
They're only interested (and capable of) playing petty politics.

Want to hear REAL oppositions? Talk with the public! Have PUBLIC hearings about EVERYTHING! Then the Liberals can't call anyone hypocrites! Transparent gov they claim to be... HA!
