Whitehorse RCMP have laid a string of drug-related charges over the last several days, they said Monday.
Whitehorse RCMP have laid a string of drug-related charges over the last several days, they said Monday.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. last Friday, officers were on patrol in the area of the Whitehorse Fish Ladder when they came across a vehicle emitting a strong smell of marijuana.
A small baggy of marijuana was located and both people in the vehicle were arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
Following a search, a second small baggy of marijuana was found as well as some drug paraphernalia.
A 19-year-old man and a 17-year-old woman are facing possession charges.
The man will make his first court appearance June 26. The female youth will appear in youth court June 20.
That same day, at approximately 6 p.m., officers saw a hand-to-hand drug transaction taking place between a man and a woman near Main Street and Third Avenue.
Both individuals were placed under arrest.
A 19-year-old man was found to be in possession of approximately 20 grams of marijuana and faces a charge of trafficking.
The 63-year-old female was found in possession of a small quantity of marijuana and will be charged with possession, police say. Both will appear in court June 26.
About half an hour later, in the area of Wood Street and Third Avenue, police said, another hand-to-hand drug transaction was observed.
A 36-year-old man was found in possession of approximately 20 grams of marijuana. He is facing a charge of trafficking and will also make a June 26 court appearance.
At about 3:30 p.m. last Saturday, Whitehorse RCMP conducted a vehicle check on the Grey Mountain Road. Three males were in the vehicle and were found smoking marijuana, police say.
The trio was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
A check of the vehicle resulted in a small quantity of marijuana being located as well as some drug paraphernalia.
An adult male and two youth are facing charges of possession.
The 19-year-old male will appear in territorial court June 26. The two youth, aged 17 and 15, will appear in youth court.
At about 1:30 Saturday morning, police saw another hand-to-hand drug transaction taking place in front of a downtown bar.
A 38-year-old man was arrested and found to be in possession of a small quantity of cocaine. He faces a charge of possession of a controlled substance, and will make his first court appearance June 26.
A second individual, 23-year-old Nicole Simard, was found allegedly in possession of approximately nine grams of cocaine, police said.
Charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, she will make a second court appearance June 5.

Good to see the police taking down the big fish. What they don't say is that these kids now can't cross the border, just lost any chance at a number of careers, and generally screwed their lives up. Over a "small baggy of marijuana".
Do the cops need someone to point them in the right direction? If you can't see who causes the problems in this town then you obviously haven't been around main street at midnight. Leave the kids alone, the damage done to those kids' futures by criminally charging them far outweighs the damage smoking a bag of pot would. Who are the police protecting? Not us, not by doing this.

"One Marijuana cigarette has as many contaminants, chemicals and tar as fifteen tobacco cigarettes." - J. Yaklin
"three cannabis joints a day cause the same damage as 20 cigarettes." - BBC
"while marijuana contains some of the same toxic chemicals as tobacco, it does not carry the same risks for lung disease." - Fox News
So. Let's take a look at Yaklin's declaration. First of all, the worst assessment I could find said that an equal amount of marijuana has 6 times the damaging chemicals as one cigarette, not 15. Next, Fox News no less, claims that despite having some of the same dangerous chemicals in it, for some reason marijuana use in the same volume as cigarette use, does NOT result in 'the same risk for lung disease'. There is lots of research for why this is so, including the anti-inflammatory effects of THC, and the fact that it helps to trigger cell death in cancerous cells. Do some research.
Lastly, most marijuana imbibers use the equivalent of one cigarette (2 grams), of marijuana a week, or less. Cigarette smokers smoke 10 to 20 or 30 per day. Right there you have tobacco users 210x as much tobacco divided by 6 = 35 times the dangerous chemicals going into the lungs of the smokers.
Just thought I'd bring a few facts and some perspective to the issue.

I don't disagree that we need to do a better job controlling booze and maybe smokes...but at this particular time dope is illegal and the cops are doing their jobs. Often the dealers that are dealing dope are dealing other stuff too so get these scumbags off the streets. Good job RCMP

Jackie Yaklin: You sound like an after school special. I see you don't attack cigarettes or booze. Which in my opinion is a lot more dangerous. But if its legal than its safe right? Everything has risks. You stepping outside your home is a risk. God put marijuana here for a reason. It wasn't invented. And no I'm not religious. I just know something or someone greater than humans put everything we see on this planet for a reason.
"One Marijuana cigarette has as many contaminants, chemicals and tar as fifteen tobacco cigarettes." Prove it. I know for a fact that marijuana doesn't cause emphysema. So your boogeyman argument is moot. Just like everything else you said.
"Even medical marijuana is prescribed only because the health condition is hopeless and the person needs to be sedated."
Wow, just wow. AIDS patients? They use it to kick start their hunger so they can eat. A lot of people are not deathly sick and marijuana helps them with pain. I saw a show where the extract, not the part that gets you high, eliminated seizures that a 3 year old child was having. You are against that? Where do you get all this garbage from? It seems you are mad at something that has the ability to help a lot of people. And I'm not just talking about getting stoned. So you are against that? Let people suffer when there is something that can improve their quality of life? You need to do some research because I have never in my life came across someone like you who has proven you have no clue what you are talking about.

Marijuana is illegal, it slows your brain down, it dulls the senses. If you want a nation to put up with unbearable living conditions, starvation, dehydration, un-health, war, oppression; just keep them stoned and tell them it doesn't hurt.
One Marijuana cigarette has as many contaminants, chemicals and tar as fifteen tobacco cigarettes.
You'll never convince me that it should be legal. Even medical marijuana is prescribed only because the health condition is hopeless and the person needs to be sedated.
As for naming Nicole Simard; she and her accomplice are both above legal age. Did you notice that the previous instances involved minors, who cannot be named? A 63 year old trafficking--I suspect who that would be. Maybe naming Nicole will help her consider that she's heading down the same road. That 63 year old likely sacrificed her family so she could enjoy the privilege of trafficking.

Wow. Way to take a few grams of weed off the streets. Good job police. Lets not worry about the unsolved murders and rapes, keep arresting these teenagers with their dime bags of pot.

I agree with Clayton what a waste of resources,a bunch of kids with a tiny bit of weed ? Stick to cocaine and more serious crime , what next a crack down on seniors J walking?

Give it up with the marijuana busts already. Totally ridiculous. Legalize it and stop wasting resources. I do appreciate the RCMP trying to do their jobs, but this simply should not be one of their jobs.

With all the crime out there the RCMP are wasting their time with this. 20 grams of pot? "small quantities of marijuana"? Really? There are few wastes of taxpayer dollars more contemptible than tying up cops, judges, etc. with petty marijuana possession. Personally I would prefer to see the stuff legalized but for the time being could we at least have police who exercise a little bit of discretion? Yeesh.

I myself don't smoke pot, but what a waste of time, money and resources on charging people with marijuana related offenses! I don't care what people say, pot is not dangerous to you, me or the people who smoke it! Cigarettes and booze should be the illegal drugs!

I wonder why, out of all of these people who got busted; Nicole Simard is the only one actually named here?
That said - it sounds like there's a lot of dumb drug traffickers and users in this town!
