No one was getting away with stealing a propane tank last Friday thanks to the local Mounties.

Whitehorse RCMP said in a statement released Monday afternoon that around 4:50 a.m. last Friday, officers were on patrol in the downtown area.

They noticed a pickup truck and two people backed onto the sidewalk allegedly trying to steal a large propane tank from the North Dragon Restaurant on Second Avenue.

They left the scene in the vehicle with police pursuing them through the downtown area and about seven kilometres up Long Lake Road. They then abandoned the truck and attempted to take off on foot.

One was arrested at the scene, with the driver being arrested at around 8 a.m. after a search involving other members of the Whitehorse detachment and the police service dog.

Tyrell Mark Sydney, 27, of Whitehorse is charged with theft under $5,000, flight from police, operating a vehicle while disqualified and breaching probation. He has been held in custody and was to appear in court this week.

Donald James Gordon, 38, of Whitehorse, is charged with theft under $5,000. He was released on a promise to appear in court on April 25.
