A mother and small child were rescued from a rolled pickup truck billowing black smoke Sunday evening, thanks to an RCMP officer who smashed in the windshield to get them out.

The small green truck crashed on Robert Service Way at around 6 p.m., leaving a 43-year-old woman and her four-year-old son trapped inside.

Bystanders told the first officer on the scene they were unable to get them out.

With "large billows of dark smoke” pluming from the vehicle, Const. Susan Shaw-Davis approached and told the woman to cover her face and the child's, as she was going to break the windshield.

"The constable utilized her baton and kicked in at the windshield, making a hole large enough for the occupants to exit the truck,” police said today.

An ambulance crew transported them to Whitehorse General Hospital as firefighters dealt with the truck.

They were released later that day.

The two family members are from British Columbia, and were visiting Whitehorse for the holidays, a police news release stated.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, which involved no other vehicles.

We are Constable Shaw-Davis's grand parents and have just read the news article on Susan. We are so very proud of her. This is not the first time that this young Mountie has performed above and beyond the call of duty. She has been posted to Whitehorse at her own request and this is the first time that she has been away from home at Christmas. What a wonderful way to spend Christmas. Don't you think? As a further note, you might like to Look into her time in Nova Scotia, where you will find a previous time in her career for which she received a special commendation for bravery. Perhaps the RCMP might elaborate. If not, We can explain a little further.

Susan is a very special young lady.
