There was no information available this morning regarding last week’s sudden closure of the federal building on Range Road.

It’s not known, for instance, why the building was closed, nor where all the employees were relocated to and how long they’ll be there.

The front entrance to the building has been sealed off, and barricades have been placed to prevent access to the parking area.

Federal officials were contacted this morning for an explanation but as of deadline early this afternoon, they were still working to provide answers.

The private national company that manages federal buildings on behalf of Ottawa indicated any questions must be forwarded to the federal government.

It’s the Star’s understanding the building was closed last Monday, and some of the federal employees were provided with office space at the Elijah Smith Building on Main Street.

The Range Road building is more than half of a century old and is located directly behind the Takhini Arena.

It houses staff from a few different agencies. The majority of employees working for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans were located in the building.

Staff and offices of the Yukon Water Board were also there.

A voice message on the water board’s line says the offices have been closed for reasons beyond their control until further notice. There is a number to call for people who want to contact the board.

One suggestion heard was the closure is related to unstable ground conditions in the immediate area, though there has been no confirmation whatsoever.

There was, on the other hand, excavation work being conducted Friday afternoon at the front of the building, but there was no activity this morning.

SNC doesn’t have the management contract anymore. Brookfield Logistics.

It was probably a leak in the sewer line that runs right by the front entrance. They had problems with it settling and leaking around 15 years ago and then about 5 years ago in the same area it's all sand underground and it washes away easily. Don't know why Brookfield laPage is keeping it a big secret ? S&!*# happens.

Information I have is that a sinkhole was developing at the front entrance. What some people may not be aware of is that there are tunnels in that area. These tunnels carried heat in steam pipes. All the buildings there were heated by steam radiators. The steam building was on the other side of Range rd. It has since been torn down. This is probably a collapsing tunnel. This same set up was also used in Hillcrest from the churches to the airport

The "private national company" aka SNC Lavalin gets to manage the property but isn't responsible for answering questions about it? Talk about passing the buck.
And why the Star wouldn't name said company is beyond me...
