NABBING VIOLATORS – Whitehorse RCMP officers have set up in various parts of the city this week, watching for speeders and drivers who commit other traffic violations. Here, officers are seen at work early Thursday afternoon on Two Mile Hill.

‘No excuse’ for speeding on Two Mile Hill: RCMP

Whitehorse RCMP issued more than 65 tickets, mostly for speeding, during a speed check set up at the top of Two Mile Hill last Thursday.

Whitehorse RCMP issued more than 65 tickets, mostly for speeding, during a speed check set up at the top of Two Mile Hill last Thursday.

Cpl. Shawn Pollard told the Star today the worst speeding the officers measured was 107 kilometres an hour.

Two Mile Hill is a 60-km/h zone.

“There has been some serious crashes on that hill,” Pollard said.

“It was spring-type weather (that day), and everybody seemed to pick up their speed.”

Two Mile Hill curves both ways and has several intersections, he noted.

“There is no excuse for speed like that on that road,” he said.

For going over the speed limit by 30 to 50 km/h, the fine in the territory is $75.

Police also handed out tickets for drivers who didn’t have valid insurance or a licence at the time they were stopped.

When I am travelling at 70kph which I feel is a safe speed, I am in the slower 50%. I suggest to the faster 50% get up 37 seconds earlier as that is all the time your saving.

Red light cameras aren't cheap.

I think... on Mar 18, 2016 at 2:43 pm

...the idea of having cameras as mentioned in an earlier note makes a whole lot of sense. It reduces the need for police presence, it is a silent observer, objective, "enlightening", catches the culprit, increases revenue, slows traffic down to the speed limit thus providing increased safety for everyone and is very inexpensive.

TP...you must be new here, or pay very little attention.
as that exact scenario happened on that very hill.
But you go ahead and be a condescending arrogant science wizard, I got thick skin...I can take it. Carry on freely expressing yourself.
My claims are not exaggerated nor misguided, only factual events of contextual history of said hill...and idiot drivers (not implying you are one). I only know how you write, not drive.

The physics on Mar 17, 2016 at 3:54 pm

@josey

It may be worth noting that physics dictates that the speeds for a vehicle to "fly" down that hill or to "fly" after hitting that curb are simply not achievable. This assumes the vehicle has no wings or added form of lift.

Perhaps what you meant was that you feel these things could happen based on...feelings? The principles of flight disagree with your...feelings. There are particular physical limitations that a vehicle must overcome to achieve flight.

I'm going to choose to believe that what you meant was, that when someone hits the divider, that they're guaranteed to lose control to the point where they wind up in the opposite or wrong lanes.

This myth is also easily debunked as you can see people have tapped that divider all up and down the hill, it did not send everyone "flying" or out of control.

By the way, before we start discussing the physics of anything, let's make sure that we are aware of how to actually calculate what will or won't happen by using real physics.

Please, continue with your misguided and exaggerated point though.

Slow Down and use some common sense! on Mar 17, 2016 at 11:41 am

Now if we could just crack down on those drivers that insist upon speeding up and breaking the speed limit just so other drivers can't get into the driving lane. What is wrong with letting other use the road??

SJ - I certainly do, that is concrete yup more like a wee curb, place for pretty flower pots, ramp even to get air and say...I dunno land on your roof near the pump house. I meant like a concrete vehicle retaining wall, to avoid folks getting said flying/speeding car impact in the uphill.
SJ - if you really did not know what I meant, I dunno?
I too hate concrete but physics is what it is, mark my words the next fatality there will be the direct result of said issue, I hope I never get proven right on this one...but I see how folks fly up/down that hill.
It will happen, just when...THEN we can re-act as being pro active?
Seems too...logical. Logic is not welcome in CoW nor our current times

I have tons of excuses to speed on that hill. Just because it is a law doesn't make it right. By the way, I have never been caught speeding, catch me if you can SUCKA'Z!

Josey, obviously you do not drive on the Two Mile Hill otherwise you'd know that there is indeed a center divider on it. Next time actually drive it before making comments like that.

Hamilton Blvd used to have limit of 70 kph, and Council reduced it on Mar 16, 2016 at 3:11 pm

As if people would reduce their speeding if the limit was lower. Drivers will drive as fast as they think they can get away with, not at a speed that is safe or reasonable. Unfortunately enforcement and a fine ... And demerits ... Are what will improve drivers' habits

next set of lights on Mar 16, 2016 at 2:11 pm

I agree, just because that's the speed everyone is doing, that doesn't mean that it's safe! If they are going that fast UP the hill, how fast are they going DOWN the hill?

And really, is anyone actually going to get anywhere that much faster? it's Whitehorse. Everywhere in Whitehorse takes 20 minutes or less even when you're doing the speed limit. You're basically just speeding to get stopped at the next set of lights.

Good ... Hamilton Blvd next please? on Mar 16, 2016 at 11:54 am

Riptide, 80 kph may be the norm, but that doesn't mean it's safe. And please continue the monitoring up
Hamilton, where there are pedestrians and cyclists and a school.

Good job M, really I mean that.
Funny thing about that hill?
There is no center divider which may improve safety.
Yes Josey there have been too many accidents there .
Hopefully any safety deficits will be addressed sooner rather than later.
Thanks again for the policing efforts.

Maybe they should spend more time catching speeders and people on cellphones on 2nd Ave where pedestrians get killed.

...to have good enforcement are cameras. They really work great in Alberta, especially Edmonton, Calgary, to name a few of the many municipalities. I would love to see them on two mile hill, 2nd Avenue and South Access to start with.

speeding or driving a reasonable speed on Mar 15, 2016 at 1:13 pm

If I'm doing 70-80 up the hill and keeping pace with cruiser ahead of me aren't we just going with the flow of traffic? 70-80 is a reasonable speed and Hamilton should be a minimum of 70 as well.

Up 72 Down 26

Riptide on Mar 14, 2016 at 11:03 pm

When the regular flow of traffic is almost always doing 80 kph that should tell you that the speed limit is flawed.

It's sad to see comments on Facebook like "FTP" or "stupid pigs got nothing better to do" guess what...obey the speed limits and you can just drive right on by!
Whitehorse has some of the worst drivers in Canada and it's good the police are cracking down on this. You have to remember this isn't just to keep you safe, it's to keep the public safe as well.

I just wish the RCMP were out there doing this every day, maybe people would smarten up if they knew the cops were consistently issuing traffic tickets. Also does anyone else think that $75 is a pretty low fine for going up to 50 kmh over the limit?

Up 61 Down 9

nonsense on Mar 14, 2016 at 3:05 pm

Do they really think a $75 fine is going to deter anyone from speeding when a $200+ ticket doesn't seem to deter anyone from using their cellphone while driving?

The geniuses that designed it (ol' traffic light aside), why they chose not to put a center divider on it is beyond me.
Yes there have been some good crashes there, I guess we are waiting for a pile of "prominent" meat to be created here before it gets addressed.
The way our many entitled morons drive, M could do this daily.
