The Yukon NDP has three more people wanting to run for the party in the upcoming territorial election.
The Yukon NDP has three more people wanting to run for the party in the upcoming territorial election.
The party announced the three nominees via a Zoom conference this morning.
Colette Acheson is a Yukon-based consultant who leads and co-ordinates diverse projects for multiple NGOs and businesses in the Yukon, Alberta and the Northwest Territories, according to a backgrounder that accompanied the news conference.
She is looking to run in Porter Creek South, held by Liberal cabinet minister Ranj Pillai.
“For a total of six years, she served as executive director with the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce and the Yukon Association for Community Living (now Inclusion Yukon).
“She has served on the board for the first few years for the Whitehorse Community Thrift Store, and was past president of Options for Independence FASD housing, and a co-chair with the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition.”
“I’m running because we can do better,” Acheson said.
“In my work, I’ve seen the cost to families and small business when the government’s plans don’t consider all Yukoners.
“Everybody deserves to take part in a healthy economy, and have options for affordable and accessible housing, transportation, and health care,” she added.
“I’m proud to be on Kate’s team,” said Acheson, referring to party leader Kate White.
“She’s always ready to listen to people and fight for what they need. I’m running to do the same.”
Saba Javed is a university student and writer. She is currently studying Peace, Conflict and Justice at the University of Toronto.
With school being online, Saba has returned home.
Growing up in the Yukon as the child of immigrants, Saba was surrounded by a community of adults and peers who supported her throughout her entire life – no matter how far away she’s moved, she always found herself coming back home.
She cares deeply about community-building, compassionate public policy, and the stories that connect us.
“I feel an immense gratitude for the welcome my family received here,” Javed said.
“I’m a student, and like a lot of people my age, the hunt for affordable housing has been almost impossible. People are getting priced out,” said Javed, wanting to become the Copperbelt North candidate.
“I’m running with Kate White and the NDP to make our housing market actually work for people.”
Liberal backbencher Ted Adel represents Copperbelt North.
Yukon Party leader Currie Dixon is also vying for the seat.
Erik Pinkerton, looking to run in Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes, is a self-employed photographer based in Whitehorse.
He and his family have made their home in Marsh Lake.
Four years ago, Pinkerton started his business and became involved in the local trades community by volunteering with Skills Yukon Canada.
He told a story about his political awakening.
After travelling internationally, Pinkerton said, he found himself in Germany with a new spouse and child, and doing apprenticeship training.
He said it was a startling awakening for him when he went to the dentist filled with apprehension about how to pay for his visit, since he wasn’t accustomed to having government health benefits covering dental work. Much to his surprise, he didn’t have to pay more than $5 for a filling.
A few years later, having moved to the Yukon, he was unpleasantly reminded he didn’t have dental coverage back in Canada.
About the same time, he met White, and when she announced she was looking for nominees, he jumped at the chance.
“People are making tough choices right now between a trip to the dentist or a trip to the grocery store, between getting a cavity filled or paying their phone bill,” Pinkerton said.
“I know that because my family has made those choices too.
“I don’t think it has to be that way, and I’m running with Kate because I know she doesn’t either. We’re going to work to make life more affordable for people.”
Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes is represented by Liberal cabinet minister John Streicker.
Thirteen potential NDP candidates have been announced for the election, whose timing Premier Sandy Silver has not specified.
“I’m proud to be building a team of candidates who understand the problems people in the Yukon face right now and are ready to do the work to find solutions,” said White.
“Together, we’re going to put people first in every decision we make. That’s how we’ll deliver the results people need.”

Dan L@ Wow, hysterical, I couldn't stop laughing. What a wit. Let me guess, you are planning to vote YP, along with those other stand up comics, JC, JS Monk, and Josey Wales, and Wilf carter? Birds of a feather.

The debate about trucks/no trucks reminds me of the debate on masks in the USA until a few weeks ago; it's all political and not rational. I, for one, intent to burn as much pollution as I need to get me thru the winter. Period.

Pinkerton's father didn't use to run a detective agency did he?

I'd like to see the Star use the same phrase, 'would-be', for YP and Liberal candidates. Just so we don't get the idea it's derogatory.

"You can be for climate change, be conscious of your choices and still drive a truck. Many people bike and use trucks to put their bikes into when they go mountain biking, or for hauling garbage, or for helping with fundraisers, to help the elderly, or their parents or...I could go on"
Ok great, so by that logic, mountain bikers are just as bad for the environment as a snowmobiler who rips around in the woods and mountains close to where they live. If you have to drive your bike in a truck to someplace like Montana Mountain in Carcross (or further), how green is that? And if trucks are used for hauling garbage, helping the elderly etc, why not tell everyone to get a truck? You are literally making the case for the need to drive gas guzzlers, ha ha ha.
So let me ask you this, when the NDP says people should drive vehicles that are smaller and more environmentally friendly or even full out electric, who is this message aimed at? Placer miners, tradesmen, outfitters etc? No, they need trucks for their work... so not them. People who work in an office building downtown? Nope, not them because they (including Kate White) have to haul garbage, help with fundraisers or help the elderly according to you. So maybe its just teenagers that the NDP thinks should go green?
Anyways it's all such a charade for the NDP. Remember the last election when the NDP were going nuts about fracking? Well oddly enough you never hear a peep from them about the BC NDP or the Alberta NDP who are in full support of fracking and natural gas development. Funny that.
But fear not, the kids you lead through the streets in climate protests will likely not research these things, so you are probably safe from some awkward questions for the time being.

Votes should be respected: So, what now, go from a Stalinist party to a Leninist? Like going from the top of the steam cooker to the water boiling bottom.

@Pikachu, I work at the Main Admin Building and the parking spots are labelled. Kate drives the smallest truck of the 3 party leaders, for what it's worth.
And anyway, what a stupid thing to say. We can all agree the Northwestel internet is slow, and we'd like it to be better, but here we are using it still. We are creatures of our environment and until we can get EV pickups, we use what we've got.

National destruction party...do as I say not as I do. Climate evolution is upon us, so what? Carbon tax makes no difference it’s just getting more money for another scandal like SNC. Right now there is no difference between the NDP and the Liberals both left and lefter.

The early days leading up to an election are quite interesting with the comments of the wannabes and I’m certain they are sincere in their motivations to become politicians and change/improve the issues that are important to them. However as many soon realize after they are elected they do not have all the power to change what they want to change. Checks and balances are built into our form of governance so that wholesale manipulation of our laws and regulations cannot happen.
I enjoy reading about their past experiences, roles they have worked in as indicators to their possible abilities. Too bad we don’t get to read their resumes. Each of us have to decide which of the candidates in our ridings we want to see representing us, however much of this is moot until the party platforms are made public and I suspect most of these will have the ambiguous visionary statements that elude to improving the quality of life for Yukoners in some way. All well and good, but I’d like to know HOW they plan to make these improvements.
Recent issues of the present government involve them taking a unilateral approach and introducing policies that were not shared with the public on purpose so that they may do as they please. This is not good governance it’s dictatorial.
If you’re going to improve healthcare – tell us how you will do that. If you will be focused on creating more jobs - tell us how will you do that. If you are seeking to address matters related to First Nations governance - tell us what and how you will do this. If you will work to help the disenfranchised in some manner, tell us which and how. Working in isolation without the viewpoints of business, industry and the many others that will be impacted by your decisions is not good governance, it’s dictatorial.
Parties elected to power must also understand that they do not have a blank cheque and permission to interpret their mandate anyway they choose. If in doubt they should consult with the electorate prior to wasting time and our money working on something that will not be well received.
And each elected person needs to remember who they are working for.

Sorry Pikachu - Unicorn farts are not possible. All Unicorn fart quotas are being used by the current government to power their dream machines of inclusivity. Fairy dust is being used to convince everyone else that what they are doing is actually inclusive but it is in short supply because Liberals tend to snort it. So... good luck with that.

Seriously Pikachu? So now it's against the law (or shall I say YOUR law) to drive a frickin' truck in the Yukon!!! You can be for climate change, be conscious of your choices and still drive a truck. Many people bike and use trucks to put their bikes into when they go mountain biking, or for hauling garbage, or for helping with fundraisers, to help the elderly, or their parents or...I could go on with the community stuff Kate's involved with that involves her truck. To attack a leader on this front is just stupid. What do you drive? Or do you walk? Hmmm...didn't think you walked or biked everywhere, bet you drive a vehicle, so if you're going to write about politics, speak to economics, poverty, finances, honesty, local hires/incentives...so personal to attack her and just her about a truck. Pikachu 'the truck police,' at least when it comes to the party Pikachu doesn't vote for.

Here’s a news flash for the NDP and Liberal candidates...there is no such thing as affordable housing...it’s gonna cost a whack of money and if you don’t work lots or have questionable habits then you may never be a home owner, so suck it up. And as for voting to support a tax like the carbon tax, it just drives the finish line even further away than it was before....apparently Liberal and NDP candidates and supporters skipped that day at school, Cathers gets my vote and I pity the NDP candidate and Liberal candidate that shows up at my place...I can’t stand hypocrites.

NDP and liberal just want to destroy Yukon and Canadian way of life. Yukon liberals are planning on taking Yukoners into debt to the tune of $500 million with no measurable out comes to benefit Yukoners, and NDP support that.
Then you have liberals and NDP supporting a carbon tax with no measurable out come only a 18 to 22% increase in our cost of living

Nice to see some people who aren't beholden to mining companies or large development companies from Alberta.
Way I see it, they certainly can't do a worse job than the YP or the Libs.

So the NDP is supposedly big into climate change stuff right? and Kate White always has pictures of herself biking or kick sledding or something.... so has anyone ever asked her why she drives a truck to her office job? Maybe one of these new candidates could ask her? I mean there generally isn't anything wrong with that, but the hypocrisy of telling people to drive more fuel efficient vehicles, take public transportation, use their bikes, etc., etc., while driving a truck is what gets me.
Now, I haven't looked into it, but it's possible that her truck runs on unicorn farts and not fossil fuels, in which case I stand corrected. But barring that, why does she need a gas guzzling truck to drive to her office job everyday? How come she can't bike or drive an electric car?
So Kate, how about you either stop driving a truck that you don't need OR stop talking about how concerned the NDP is about climate change and lecturing others. If you are going to talk the talk, you should walk the walk!

votes should be respected on Feb 15, 2021 at 7:14 pm
When I vote for an MLA, I would hope that my vote is respected. I feel let down that I voted in the last election liberal, but I won't be this time. Mess up schooling for everybody, and the least they could do is put a minister in place, for my children, who knows education. And local hires! Why does every government elected solely focus on bringing friends up here, or people who are southern hires when many Yukoners cannot get jobs in trades (always a southern company to build schools, do gov. contracts) or get jobs like teaching, nursing, etc.
Colette is a giver in this community and she will run a strong election. The NDP had a local hire in place back in the 1990's--trust me, most of us want to work and are pissed off when we see people who don't even live here cruising into positions. Local hire policy, work with business owners and turn this around.
