The Yukon RCMP’s soon-to-be new criminal operations officer will come to the territory from Ottawa, where he’s currently director of national aboriginal policing and crime prevention services.
In his new position, Supt. Tyler Bates will be responsible for police operations in the Yukon.
Yukon RCMP issued a news release last Thursday announcing his hiring. He will start the new job in the coming months.
“Superintendent Bates brings a wealth of knowledge in both federal and provincial/territorial policing,” the release said.
“His experience and leadership in the alignment, implementation of prevention initiatives within vulnerable communities will further advance the positive work being undertaken with partners across our territory and he will provide a vital conduit to resources and expertise at national headquarters, and throughout Canada.”
Bates is originally from Manitoba. He has a degree in criminology from the University of Winnipeg and graduated from the joint staff and command program at Canadian Forces College.
Bates has 22 years’ service with the RCMP, and has experience working with First Nations communities. He’ll move to the Yukon with his wife and three children. He enjoys playing and coaching hockey.
Bates was appointed by Commissioner Bob Paulson after an “intensive executive staffing process,” which included consultation with the Yukon’s Department of Justice, the news release stated.
Current criminal operations officer, Supt. Paul McConnell, has held the position since 2010. He is leaving to become chief superintendent in charge of the Southern Alberta District.
The RCMP said Bates will be available for media interviews once he arrives in the Yukon.
