NDP MLAs subjected to abusive behaviour
Yukon NDP Leader Kate White wasn’t a happy camper last Thursday as she left work on the last day of the legislative sitting.

White said she was accosted by protestors of the government’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate as she made her way to her vehicle outside the Yukon Government Main Administration Building.
She said the protestors were shouting and using obscenities as she made her way to her vehicle, which was surrounded by people.
“It was a pretty rough day,” she told the Star Tuesday. “I knew there were protestors, but it had escalated quite a bit from earlier.”
White said she fully supports people protesting, but when their behaviour reaches aggression and violence, “It’s never OK.”
She said she’s taken part in her fair share of protests, but hadn’t seen one at the level of what happened last Thursday.
“I understand why they’re angry,” she said.
“But it was frightening and not acceptable for staff members, who also use the entrance the MLAs do.”
White was reluctant to offer further details as to what happened. She did say some of the protestors were standing on cars.
When she eventually got into her vehicle and tried to leave, the protestors barred her way for a short period, White said.
She said her two NDP MLA colleagues, Emily Tredger and Annie Blake, also encountered some of the same behaviour.
“All of the MLAs use the same entrance,” White said.
Tim Kucharuk, the press secretary for the Yukon Party, said Tuesday none of his MLAs experienced the same behaviour.
The Yukon Liberals did not respond to the Star’s inquiry on the matter.

It’s sad and a travesty when we need video footage to prove slander and purposeful derision by those we trust whence voted into places of power and privilege.
This kind of miscreant behavior exists at all levels of government but is PROVEN here and now.
I stand strongly by those able to catch these moments for THEY are the heros by showing us the LIARS with the dishonest title of ‘honorable’ ... clearly not.
I publicly demand Kate apologize and then step down from her lofty place of self serving ignorance.
Anything less is to spit in the face of Yukoners and all Canadians in general.

PS - I remember when the Yukon Party acted this way about the Peel protesters! They were the only party that did not come outside to address the crowd of hundreds of people from all different backgrounds, and one of them said something to the effect that it was the same group of cranks who show up to everything, and that they were not going to waste their time on such losers. I believe that was dear little Currie Dixon, back then. I was in that crowd and so were quite a few people I knew - to my surprise! Because none of us were 'protester' types. The YP got the boot next time around. Of course the NDP already got the boot, but have managed to sell their meagre representation in the Legislature to the Liberals in return for grotesquely outsized influence that Yukoners did not vote for!

Kate White only meets with, or stops to talk to, certain people. And they aren't going to be people who disagree with her. Especially after she had a 'pretty rough day' hanging out in her $120,000 a year job, digs.
Kate is most certainly not interested in talking to people who are not her tribe.
I watched the two videos posted at yukonfreedom.com Kate comes out of the building. A person asks her in a polite and calm tone if she will talk to them. As an aside, the video starts with the crowd listening to and talking with Brad Cathers. They maintain a respectful distance and stand there holding their home made signs and their Yukon flags. So Kate comes out, the man with the megaphone quietly asks if she will talk to them. She does not even slow down but walks right by them and crosses into the parking lot. Not a single person goes after her or blocks her. The camera swings toward the parking lot as several people chant, "Shame! Shame!" loudly. Then one man yells, "F-you Kate!" about 4 times in a row. The man with the mega phone tells him this is a peaceful protest or something like that, and he stops. A few seconds later, a truck drives out of the parking lot and turns onto 2nd Avenue. I assume it is Kate's truck.
Here is Kate's version of events, "When she eventually got into her vehicle and tried to leave, the protestors barred her way for a short period, White said."
If they 'barred her way', I did not even notice it or see it and that 'short period' must have been one or two seconds and could have been accidental.
I am really dismayed that Kate White, being an NDPer and all supportive about protests and rights, is so incredibly dismissive of anyone who disagrees with her position, to the point where she won't even stop for 5 minutes to hear from someone outside of her own echo chamber. And it's pretty bad that she lied about these people too, and made them sound like a violent mob.

Wake TF up and look at some other places on this earth and what they have dealt with during the pandemic. We have been and still are one of the luckiest places on earth regarding this.
Get your heads out of the sand and put some of your pathetic efforts at protesting into making an actual difference in your community. You're not even good at trying to mimic what people who actually care about social justice do. You're desperation to be part of something and to feel marginalized makes you look like fools, at best. Or continue to bully politicians that that aren't even in power just because you disagree with what the actual government in power is doing...Yes that makes a ton of logical sense.

Videos of the protest event show that Kate is not telling the truth. She no longer has to maintain the pretext of caring for the 'little people' to suck up votes. Her deal with the Liberals to prop up their failing government has guaranteed her golden handshake pension for life. She doesn't care about anything else but herself, and is now just biding her time keeping a seat warm until the voters wise up and boot her to the curb. When that happens she will be out of here in a flash and we'll never see her again. That can't come too soon.

@Denise Leschart, what if getting vaccinated doesn't help with the common good? I got vaccinated, too, because since the beginning they said that would bring an end to the pandemic. I'm not anti-vax. But it looks to me that they will be moving on to recommending a fourth shot in less than a year (when an Omicron vaccine is developed) and enough is enough. That doesn't look like confidence to me.
It seems to me very odd that they are aiming for a target of "everybody" getting the vaccine to bring that end around. What kind of science aims for a perfect score? Can't accommodate a few stragglers? Why is the Yukon, or Ireland, or Israel, with very high rates of vaccination, in virtually the same position as countries with, say, about 60 percent vaccination rate? After two years of devoting themselves almost exclusively to Covid, improving treatments, coming up with vaccines, why can't they do any better than sounding exactly as panicked as they did in March, 2020?
It would all be a moot point, except now there's movement by authorities to force the vaccination on people. Maybe not in Canada yet, but our general direction is to follow what would have been unthinkable in 2019. Or early 2020. Like people having to choose between their jobs and a vaccine they just simply don't want, which may turn out in the end to be a high cost for a pretty benign decision.
Even if they could guarantee that mandatory vaccines would definitely bring an "end to the pandemic" -- at what cost to our society? What does that even look like, if governments make people absorb something into their bodies that they don't want? When they can't even point to results that justify that kind of action, it's a terrible prospect.
The anti-vaxxers have not helped with the over-the-top rhetoric and I get that. But that shouldn't stop us from exercising our long-forgotten right to question conventional wisdom. Especially when the panicked remedies edge ever closer to threatening all aspects of our autonomy, with very little to show for it. You might not be particularly concerned about that right now, but you could still spare some empathy for those who feel differently about it, and are paying the cost.

It is with deep dismay and disappointment that I read many of the comments above. I am dismayed and disappointed because there are many who have commented here without knowing ALL THE FACTS. I encourage you to go online and read Hansard to see what Kate had to say in the Yukon Legislative Assembly on November 25th, respecting the non-confidence vote in the current Liberal Government and the handling of the sexual abuse case at Hidden Valley School. These events began when a Yukon Party Government was in power. I've posted this on my Facebook Page. As for those are accusing Kate of taking away their livelihoods, I say this: You made the choice to do that. Yes I have been vaccinated three times because if it helps the common good, then I want to be part of that. To accuse someone else of taking away your job when you knew what the choice was and chose to do this to yourself is .... I have no words.

I agree Wilf - let's talk about something that affects all Yukoners. The Cost of Living. Whether you are on a fixed income, welfare, earning wages or retired you must have noticed that the cost of all items have gone up. How are we going to be able to manage in the future? Where is it going to stop? How are we going to be able to eat, etc., in the future?

Sorry Kate, but if you can't handle some crass protestors without feeling threatened, you aren't ready to be Premier.
You are only getting a small taste of what you would deal with on a more regular basis if you were Premier or even a Minister. When you make tough decisions, you deal with tough consequences, that's what leadership is about. Constantly playing the victim will get you nowhere. Oh and this is only a short time after Emily Tredger said she was scared to be in the legislature with Tracy Mcphee.
The NDP are scared of their own shadows and the Yukon Party would make mince meat out of them if they somehow ever formed government.

I know tons of people that worked all their life in the private sector and done fine for themselves with no-union to protect them. Some interesting repetitive behavior displayed by the leader of the NDP of late.
I've noticed an uncanny ability of the leader of the NDP to grab on to a piece of political discord and turn it into a media event centered on themselves. The vote on McPhee became a story about the personal trauma experienced by the leader of the NDP, and the the political discord on display at the legislature gain becomes a story about trauma felt by the leader of the NDP. That is an abnormal amount of fascination with oneself.

I lost my job on the 26th. I worked in this clinic for 3 to years. I decided to go to this protest on the 2nd, I was there from 4pm to about 8pm. The people there were all very nice, different careers, directors, employees, government, stewardess, health care... first Nations, white... Women, men... No one I've seen were violent. There was actually quite a bit of humor going on. Kate got booed, I've heard a few bad words and some people asked if they could ask her a few questions. She looked at the floor the whole time, went to her car and left. No one followed her and btw there was some cups in the parking lot. So Kate, speaking bad about people that just lost their jobs and that came protest peacefully is not cool at all

I attend these rallies. These are good kind people. These are people who are vaxed and unvaxed joining together in a common goal to support our country and our Yukon in the basic right to work and feed our families and freedom of choice in regards of our health and body. They are our community. They care. Why is such division and separation going on?? These are our friends, family and neighbors, co-workers. Good people who support our community, work and pay their taxes.
I have seen no violent behavior, no spitting on cars, no blocking anyone. There is something inherently wrong when we purposefully take away a persons ability to buy food and pay for housing. And to Kate, there is camera footage of you leaving peacefully. It makes me wonder if you were the patsy to take one for the team in an effort to make good people of your community look really bad to support your cause, which is what now? We are good people, your community, standing strong. How about you now that your plan to hurt good people backfired?

I first heard on CBC that you said people spit on your car. Then it was that people were standing on cars, blocking people from getting in and out of cars, - whatever- make it sound as bad as you want. Those people would be happy to trade you places and still have a job to leave from at the end of the day. You cannot explain in any scientific way why you have to fire people who are not injected with an experimental 'product' that does not stop transmission or contagion AND all because of a virus that you have OVER 99% rate of recovery from. I recall the violent behaviors when unions get charged up about all things political. It is not so much about left or right ideology, but rather there is something specific that they are pissed off about. Covid restrictions? Perhaps, but I suspect some of the protesters have a menu of reasons to select from as she continues to prop up this lame duck government.

Why does the population with the lowest vaccination uptake get a free pass? I thought the science was clear and that society demands everyone get vaccinated? I wonder how moral crusaders will work this one out.

Well of course they didn't! Why would their own supporters be angry with them? The Yukon Party signed and delivered their petition. If anything, the Yukon Party probably encouraged them to come out and protest. Not publicly of course, but behind closed doors.

Kate, There were three independent filmers there that recorded the whole event. We have you on film leaving the building. And hard evidence on film of no one on vehicles, being violent, blocking or chasing you. There was a few raised voices when you walked by, but quickly calmed down afterwards. You were asked to talk to the people and you shook your head and walked away. That's what angered people. Treating us like plebs.

They shouldn't be doing that, obviously. But with the greatest respect, Kate also threw her support behind the Wet’suwet’en territory protest, and while I don't follow it closely, I doubt that they are always the soul of decorum.
The cherrypicking of good protest/bad protest throughout the pandemic really gets to me. It's just so shameless.

But maybe those who once supported you no longer think much of your politics given your dishonesty and support of lieberals immoral policies either. Weird, I was there, didn’t see anybody standing on cars. And when cars did drive through or try to leave people may have been slow as they didn’t notice right away but nobody purposefully blocked anybody. We don’t need to villainize people who are trying to protest losing their jobs and body autonomy.
Vaccinated people brought variants home and the unvaxxed are still the bad guys. They’re standing in the cold asking for freedom, and not just for themselves. Can we finally move on to promoting truth, data/statistical transparency and actual health measures?

If you want to play dirty you better be ready for the repercussions. Don't whine that you couldn't move your car for 3.5 seconds when you've just taken away jobs from hundreds and hundreds of your fellow yukoners. All because you don't want them to have a choice. Think about that next time you're inconvenienced for a couple seconds in between your big pay checks. I don't know how you sleep at night.

You wanted to be a politician Kate. You made that choice. Now stop complaining and know this is a consequence of YOUR actions. Isn’t this the exact same message the government is telling all of those FORCED to be without a job!?! Clearly the NDP is more concerned about keeping Sidney warm this winter. It is sadly very clear that neither the NDP or Liberals care about who is keeping the population warm and fed due to forced job loss.

These people are completely out of control. What little sympathy people may have had for them went by the wayside a long time ago. It’s the same 20 loudmouths all over social media. They make every single issue about Covid, vaccines and mandates even when no one was talking about that. The rest of the functioning thinking members of society can go days without even thinking or speaking of Covid.
I’m sorry to say but when you keep harping the same talking points and misinformation repeatedly it loses meaning, the same with the protests. No one is listening, nothing is changing. Either adapt or keep your ramblings to yourself and your like minded cronies. Just because you are a REALLY loud and obnoxious minority it doesn’t make you right.

It wasn't like this at all. I lost my job and went to protest cause this is going to far. I'm very peaceful and was hoping it would be like most of the peaceful worldwide protests. I was there from 4pm to 8pm, when I left only Mr Silver had not left. I was at the entry of the parking side and I didn't see any violence. There was humor actually like: Merry Christmas from the unemployed!! Shout at the MLA. Several cops came by and even chatted with us and said thanks for keeping things peaceful. So I don't know what Mrs White is talking about.
I sent Mrs White an email 2 weeks ago explaining my situation and that I'd like her to respond to me and I've never gotten anything. Mrs White If you think people are all your friends these days, you live in pink world cause I m sorry but you are pushing a part of society away and still have the guts to say we are all in this together.

You were asked nicely to answer some questions as soon as you came out, but instead of staying for a minute, you turned your back on a group of those that had just lost their jobs due to the mandate! It was after that, when you were past the group, that 1 guy started yelling at you, the guy on the mega phone quickly quieted him.

She was not even near the protester's never mind surrounded. About 30 m away at least. Yes, she was booed out but what do you expect when you mess with peoples lives? Brad Cather's talked to us and all was very calm. Sandy Silver and John Streicker didn't even come out and face us. It's going to be interesting in the future because there will be prosecution and trials. Government and officials will be there.

They did not physically assault you, they are venting their frustration and as you sit on your throne propping up the liberals you are responsible equally for destroying people’s liberties and livelihoods. Outright lies! I was there with the group when Ms. White exited. Many of us were chanting "SHAME! SHAME!" Nobody was on a vehicle and nobody was with 100 feet of Ms. White's truck as she walked to it, and nobody was blocking her vehicle. There was zero violence. We have video to prove she is lying.

You and Silver are directly responsible to putting 350 people off work, at Christmas time, people with families, mortgages, trying to use the force of government to break them. To make them go down the path you want them on. Politicians get to distance themselves from reality. But, when they are right in your face, that kinda makes it real personal. I expected much worse. Actions are more revealing of one's true character than words are. Perhaps the actions of the bureaucrats should be looked at for what they truly are. They can dish it out but they can't take it.
It appears the protesters don't sugarcoat it, they tell it like it is. Maybe instead of crying about it, you should listen to them. Try to understand their side. Go for a coffee with them. Oh wait.

Now they are off as a group enjoying the Christmas season in Vancouver.
Group activities like this are the main spreaders of covid even if all are vaccinated.
They will bring back covid with them to infect the Yukon further.

Boo hoo! You should be happy so many people are actually interested in politics. They are allowed to peacefully assemble, just because it's against your policies doesn't mean they're wrong, grow a thicker skin and move on.
