Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes MLA Kevin Barr has thrown his hat into the ring for a second term in the legislature.
Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes MLA Kevin Barr has thrown his hat into the ring for a second term in the legislature.
The NDP MLA announced his re-election bid in Carcross on Sunday afternoon, but his decision was made much earlier.
“Initially when I ran (in 2011), I thought I would run for two terms for consistency ... and to follow through on the work that we, out in the riding, have accomplished,” Barr said in an interview this morning.
There have been several victories since he took office, he added.
His motion to make National Aboriginal Day a statutory holiday received some movement in the legislature when it was passed unanimously by members, though at this point, it is unclear whether the government will act on the motion.
Another small victory was improving communities’ access to news coverage.
At one point a few years ago, not everyone in the communities had access to CBC radio, he said.
“We got together throughout the riding and got that reinstated,” Barr recounted.
Constituents in his riding were also vocal throughout conversations around the use of hydraulic fracturing in the territory, and have continually expressed interest in seeing development in renewable energy and infrastructure.
“To be developing those things is something I’ve heard over and over again, so I’ll be supporting that,” Barr said.
It is this commitment to voicing the concerns of the people that Barr plans to continue doing if re-elected.
“Politics for me is about community – about people coming together and making their voices heard. My style has been, and will continue to be, as an advocate, a supporter and MLA who works for all Yukoners,” Barr said in a statement Sunday.
So far, one other person has come forward to run in Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes.
Former city councillor John Streicker announced he is seeking the Liberal nomination last summer. A formal Yukon Liberal nomination meeting for Mount Lorne-Southern Lakes has been scheduled for March 3, where the official candidate will be decided upon.
If Streicker wins the nomination, it could be the second time that he and Barr have squared off in an election.
In 2011, both men ran against current Yukon MP Larry Bagnell and former MP Ryan Leef in the federal election, which Leef ultimately won.
“I do believe the most important poll is what happens on election day,” Barr said.
“But I’m going to continue to work hard. I do enjoy what I’m doing and I wish to continue doing it.”
It is not known when the Yukon NDP will be having its own nomination meetings.

Ok, I'll bite. Does all the economic activity in Carcross not count then? Annie lake road improvements? Ability for Mt Lorne hamlet residents to subdivide their properties? Remote residential lots available for the public in this riding? None of those count? I guess by your own skewed metric they won't because only the YP really cares, right?
Take off your political blinders Wilf old buddy.

BnR It is the responsibility of all MLA's to go after money and opportunity on Feb 24, 2016 at 11:48 am
for each riding they represent it does not matter what party you are in. There has been none of this done in any of the NDP ridings or the liberal riding. This goes to show the lack of understanding of some people in the job of an MLA.

What have you done....AKA Wilf
You DO know that Kevin is not in the governing party, right?
Your questions are best addressed to the YP.

what I have seen on Feb 23, 2016 at 2:11 pm
Kevin showed up at my friends' house to get details from them about a very serious government related problem they were having. A total lack of follow up, procrastination, not taking the problem seriously was what they were getting from the government agency.
That is what representatives should do. They called his office and he actually came to their house, showed up. Came to them. He was genuinely interested and took their concerns forward. There was accountability because their elected representative did his job and represented them at the government level in the face of The Bureaucracy.
Also, from being at events I know that Kevin is always asking people about their ideas for economic development. I have told him my thoughts on the matter, ie that the Yukon should develop a user-friendly trail system for tourism, events, and local users. This has resulted in a lot of tourism in other jurisdictions and we can see in the Yukon how things have picked up in Carcross since they put in a good, user friendly, purpose based trail system.
I think Kevin is accessible, he is not corrupt (which is saying something in itself), he cares about his community, and he will take the ball and run with it for you if you tell him what your ideas are.
The other thing is, Kevin is not at all addicted to being a politician and he'll be just fine with it if he doesn't get elected, too.

"What have you done for your riding" - Great questions for the ruling Party. What have they done.
As for Mr. Barr, I have known the man for nearly 30 years and he has my utmost respect. I do not support the NDP or their political views, however, I do believe that Mr. Barr brings genuine integrity and honor to politics. If you have a bad word against this man, then you don't know him. Go for it Kevin.

Awesome guy, a fine musician and a snappy dresser but he doesn't get that people need decent stable jobs to put food on the table. A little too ideologically driven and prone to tilting at windmills and not seeing the big picture.
Will be interesting to see what kind of candidate the YP digs up down in the ML-SL area.

Of course he likes what he is doing. It pays good and allows him to play his guitar.

First on the what have you done issue: To start we need a completely uncorrupt politician. A firm believer in the rights of nature. An individual so powerful as orator and visionary he can persuade the entire public of the Yukon to follow his stainless plan for the preservation of Yukon as an independent state. And further he must be a believer in reincarnation for all those looking ahead.

What have you done for your riding on Feb 22, 2016 at 3:50 pm
Nothing in job creation, no economic development, no community development, nothing on infrastructure, nothing on training people, no forward thinking or planning for the riding to improve its future, no relationship building with other parties for the good of the riding or Yukon as whole, no partnership with First Nation/Feds and Yukon on developing opportunities identifying and development the land development.
Please give the riding the vision of what you see where the riding can go and what needs to be done to move it forward!
