Incumbent MLA Kate White officially became the Yukon NDP’s candidate for Takhini-Kopper for the coming election on Wednesday evening.

Sixty local party members met at Yukon College to officially nominate her for a second term.

“I am honoured to represent one of the most diverse ridings in Whitehorse,” White said in a statement.

“I have worked hard for my constituents, to make sure their voices have been heard for the past five years.”

Born and raised in the Yukon, White is a familiar face in both the anglophone and francophone communities of Whitehorse.

“Kate’s work in the legislature has focused on standing up for women, youth and mobile home owners, and she has been an outspoken critic of the government’s approach to affordable housing and the environment,” the NDP said.

“She is also well known for her Red Seal-certified baking and cake decorating skills and her enthusiasm for the Yukon’s many mountain biking trails. “

“Kate White truly represents all of us, especially the younger population, and it’s so important that we elect her to represent us again in 2016,” said Carol Ann Gingras, a New Democrat and riding resident.

After the meeting, White was joined by members and supporters under the bright evening sun to enjoy a game of bocce ball.

Jeane Lassen will be the Liberals’ candidate in the riding.

I am happy Kate will be running. I find her to be honest, straight forward and true to her promises. In other words..she isn't a politician yet.

I am a little afraid of the NDP party as a whole. I don't want a government that is devoted to a 'social conscience' philosophy. I won't vote YP because I truly despise everyone in that party. Even after they are voted out, I won't want to look at them. I am a lot afraid of the Liberal Party and the 30 billion dollar deficit Junior is running.. someone is going to have to pay that bill.. and it is almost always seniors and low income families.. the low hanging fruit as it were. Going after the rich? hmmmm.. Junior already made deals with the rich caught in the Panama Papers scandal.. I am going to vote for Kate simply because I would like to see a face I can respect in office.. while at the same time hoping NDP don't actually get in. Liz Hanson leaves a lot to be desired as a leader.

Let's see ... vote for someone who has represented her constituents very well for 5 years. Has been involved in many issues of community concern for years prior to being elected. Wasn't discouraged when she ran for office the first time and lost ... but simply rededicated herself to the community ... vs. what?

I'm sure her opponents in the next election are nice people but what they bring to the table in terms of experience and demonstrated commitment to their riding, and the Yukon across a wide range of concerns and issues facing us now - simply falls short.

Too bad for her libs are gonna sweep the next election. Mrs. White has her heart in the right place, her candidacy in the wrong party.
